Push Factors
  • Push
  • They were being prosecuted for their religion
  • They had no religious freedom, which meant they
were forced to go to war
  • because they were against war, the Americans
took all their cattle and livestock, making the
    whole group feel unwelcome.

5
Pull
  • They would not be
  • permitted to take up
  • arms in the military
  • They would be permitted
  • to teach their children in their own schools
  • Mainly, they would be allowed RELIGIOUS FREADOM

6
When They Came to Canada
  • They came to Canada in the mid 1860s. After
being prosecuted in Russia, they fled to South
  • Dakota in the United States.
  • Because they would not take
  • up arms with the States, Americans
  • made them feel very unwelcome.
  • Because of this, they travelled
  • to Canada, where they have
  • stayed. There are still
  • about 25000 Hutterites in Canada

7
Continued Traditions
  • They still have their communal lifestyle, which
means they have no private property
  • Everyone in a community owned everything
  • They live in groups of aprox. 130
  • The villages farmland surrounds the village,
    like it always has.
  • They sill dress in their traditional attire.
  • A group of elders made and still make all the
    important decisions

8
Contributions to Canada
  • They are part of the agriculture of our country,
selling and collecting goods like apples,
carrots, tomato and other fruits and vegetables
  • They contribute to our pluralistic society,
    making it a unique place.
  • They follow their pacifist beliefs, creating a
more peaceful atmosphere in Canada and in their
    villages.

9
Their Impact
  • The Hutterites farms provide many goods and meat
etc. They probably fed many people who were in
need or had no farms to grow their own stuff.
First nations whos land had been taken from them
by the British and Immigrants, must have been
very great full for the farms the Hutterites had
grown and sold for cheap. This is probably their
    greatest impact.
