Avoid Whitewash Really Evaluate!
  • Colin William, ATM-S

To Get Started
  • Evaluate me!

3
Question for You

4
Why Do We Evaluate?
  • From The Art of Effective Evaluation
  • Motivation
  • Recognize improvement
  • Reinforce desire
  • Facilitate learning
  • Help in development of courage to speak

5
SoAnother Question for You
  • Whats whitewashing?
  • Whats wrong with it?

6
So
  • Whats wrong with it?
  • Impedes future motivation
  • Impedes future improvement
  • Self esteem is earned, not given
  • It doesnt facilitate learning for either the
    speaker or other club members
  • This can hurt membership

7
Question for you
  • What are some of the causes of whitewashing in
    evaluations?

8
Causes of Whitewash
  • Emotional issues
  • Not wanting to hurt someones feelings
  • Club culture

9
Causes of Whitewash
  • Educational issues
  • Lack of communication between speaker and
    evaluator
  • Lack of good examples
  • What is constructive criticism?
  • Lack of feedback

10
Causes of Whitewash
  • Perhaps the main cause
  • Its easier!
  • So, we need to work on evaluation

11
What is a Good Evaluation?
  • From The Art of Effective Evaluation
  • Show that you care
  • Suit your evaluation to the speaker
  • Learn the speaker's objectives
  • Listen actively
  • Personalize language

12
Avoiding Whitewash
  • Things to do before the meeting
  • Things to do the day of the speech
  • Things to do within the evaluation
  • Things to do on an ongoing basis

13
Before the Meeting
  • Talk with the speaker
  • Find out what theyre working on
  • Read the manual
  • Speech description and objectives
  • Past evaluator notes

14
The Day of the Speech
  • Touch base again with the speaker
  • Announce brief objectives before speech
  • Gives everyone a chance to listen actively
  • Plan how youll take notes
  • I divide a sheet of paper into 6 areas content
    intro/conclusion/structure physical/voice/gesture
s language points to grow and a sixth area to
    outline the eval
  • These can be altered according to speech
    objectives
  • Check in with speaker after the meeting

15
Within the Evaluation
  • Construct evaluation so as to not start or finish
    with any criticisms
  • Think of criticism not just in terms of things
they did wrong, but also in terms of ways the
    speech could be (even) better
  • Discuss the speakers progress based on past
    speeches and evaluations
  • Adapt to their level as a speaker

16
Within the Evaluation
  • Use positive, constructive language
  • From The Art of Effective Evaluation
  • Avoid you should, you failed to, etc.
  • Use constructive language
  • I suggest
  • Your next speech could have more impact if
  • A technique I have found useful is
  • I like referring to points to grow

17
Within the Evaluation
  • Focus on objectives, but dont forget other
    aspects of the speaking experience
  • What you saw/heard/felt
  • Organization/transitions
  • Intro and conclusion
  • Gestures and movement
  • Type of language they used
  • Confidence and demeanor

18
On an Ongoing Basis
  • Seek feedback on your evaluations
  • Consider an evaluation mentor
  • Actively listen to others evaluations
  • Make sure your club uses the General Evaluator
role to provide feedback on evaluations
  • Seek feedback from TMs who leave, to ensure that
club evaluations were not the problem

19
Any Questions?
20
So, Evaluate Me!
  • Forget the positives, give me constructive
criticism in a positive, supportive way
