Pilot experience
23
Objectives and Design
  • Combined approach
  • generation of quantitative AND qualitative data
  • Relevant aspects
  • usability
  • general level of satisfaction
  • remarks and suggestions

24
Methods
  • Learning-modules were designed differently to
    determine possible preferences
  • module crime-prevention extensive, theoretical
    content - no feedback-option
  • module road traffic law reference database for
officers with focus on practical use
  • module new legislation stalking brief
account of a current issue including a
    feedback-option

25
Methods
  • the first pilot sample consisted of three
candidate-courses for the higher police service
with 15-20 students each (blended learning)
  • all courses were verbally instructed to operate
freely on the learning-platform and make use of
the various modules and functions available
  • all courses were given about one hour to operate
on the platform before starting the survey/ group
    discussion

26
Qualitative approach
  • Moderated group discussion
  • Students were asked to
  • describe their impressions
  • make suggestions
  • address questions to the instructors
  • The results of the group discussion were
journalised and categorized to allow further
    analysis

27
Quantitative approach
  • Questionnaire (survey function on platform)
  • The questionnaire used to gather quantitative
data consisted of six questions concerning
  • overall impression
  • graphical appearance
  • usability
  • level of experience regarding new media
  • interest in further utilisation
  • suggestions and remarks (open question)

28
Results
  • After revision of the journals that resulted
from the group discussions / questionnaire, the
    following insights were gained
  • positive tenor towards e-learning in general
  • no serious problems regarding the usability of
    the platform
  • sufficient experience in using new media

29
Results
  • popularity of the stalking-module (topical
    currency and feedback-option)
  • sporadic critique regarding German plug-in
  • suggestion to implement more multi-media content
  • substantial interest in further utilisation
  • Spontaneous usage of chatroom-function and email
    contacts

30
Administrators suggestions
  • insufficient plug-in (revision currently
    undergoing)
  • insufficient protection of data-security
    (survey-function does not offer reliable
    anonymisation)
  • survey-function does not meet scientific
    standards
  • provided tools for module-creation are of limited
    use (lack of options)
  • lack of back-up functions
  • ATNOVA and IPoS are currently taking measures to
find solutions to the problems mentioned above

31
Preview
  • After having solved the problems mentioned
    before, IPoS will
  • implement further modules covering issues of
police tactics in self protection, risk
assessment in domestic violence and police
interrogation which have already been developed
  • organize a follow-up pilot experience with police
    officers throughout northern Germany
  • organize a nation-wide dissemination conference
    in spring 2008

32
Perspectives
  • Adaptation of vocational training to blended
    learning approach
  • Training of teachers and trainers in WebPOL
