Circulation Desk
At the Circulation Desk, library materials may
be checked out, returned and renewed. A USC
Upstate ID is required for check out and renewal
of all materials. A book drop is located on the
outside wall of the front of the library
building. Course Reserves and Interlibrary Loan
materials may also be obtained from this service
point.
Course Reserves Course reserves are items that
professors select specifically for use by
students in their classes. There are two types
electronic reserves and library reserves. A
maximum of 3 library reserves may be checked out
from the circulation desk at a single time.
Interlibrary Loan Interlibrary Loan (also known
as ILL) is a service that tries to obtain
materials not owned by this library. Staff will
locate the item at another library and have it
delivered to this library for pick up at the
circulation desk. Make a request by completing an
online registration and request form found on the
librarys web page.

Reference Area
Located in the Reference Area are computer
terminals that patrons can use to conduct their
research. There also is a Subject Guides Tower
which contains information about library
collections and services, research sources for a
variety of academic disciplines, and information
about the World Wide Web.  Subject guides focus
mainly on print resources but may include a few
helpful websites. Library faculty serve the
research needs of the USC Upstate community. They
provide instruction in the location and use of
resources available in the library. From
off-campus, reference services are available by
phoning the reference desk (864-503-5638) or by
using the Ask a Librarian email service,
accessible from the librarys home page.

Computer Lab
The librarys state-of-the-art Computer Lab
provides easy access to the Internet. The lab is
equipped with 36 workstations, laser printers and
a scanner for student use. Microsoft Office
Products, as well as other applications, are
loaded on each computer. The Computer Lab is
staffed at all times except Saturday mornings
from 1000 until noon.

Audiovisuals Area
The library has televisions, videocassette
players and a DVD player available for watching
course-related materials. The televisions
are hardwired to USC Columbia and may be used for
viewing distance education courses.

Group Study Areas and Computers for E-mail Access
Study tables are located in the center of the
librarys first floor. Along the back wall of
this floor are group study rooms that are
available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Toward the rear of this level are several
computers that can be used to only access the
Internet. These computers are not connected to a
printer.

Assistive Equipment Room
In order to assist students with disabilities,
Library Room 124 is equipped with a desktop
computer with the following software JAWS, MAGic
(screen enlargement) and OpenBook (scan and
read capability) software connected to a scanner.
There is also a closed circuit television. Low
lighting is in effect in this room to assist in
illumination of the computer screen.

Reference Collection
The librarys reference collection is located in
Ranges 0-9 and are designated by red signs at
ends of the aisles. The Reference Collection is
arranged by the Library of Congress
Classification System.  These materials can not
be checked out.

General Circulating Collection
Materials in the General Circulating Collection
can be checked out from the library and include
books, videocassettes, DVDs, music and other
recordings. This collection is arranged by the
Library of Congress Classification System and is
split between the first and second floors of the
library. Books with classification numbers A-N
are located on the first floor. Each range in the
library is numbered. The General Circulating
Collection on the first floor begins at Range 10
and goes through Range 35.

Juvenile Collection
The librarys Juvenile Collection contains
award-winning children and adolescent
literature titles that support the School of
Educations curriculum.
Oversize Collection
The Oversize Collection consists of books that
are either too tall or too wide to fit on
standard library shelves.

Curriculum Materials Lab
The Curriculum Materials Lab is a collection of
materials for use by teachers and education
majors to develop lessons and activities in the
K-12 classroom. Resources include textbooks,
teachers editions, media kits, and other
ancillary materials.

Periodicals Collection
Magazines and journals are located in the
Periodicals Collection of the library. The
librarys Periodicals Collection is located in
Ranges 35-48 and are designated by blue signs at
ends of the aisles.

Current Periodicals Section
The most recently received issues of magazines,
journals, and newspapers are located in the
current periodicals section and are shelved in
alphabetical order. The Current Periodicals
Section is located on the first floor in Ranges
46-48. Shelves in this section may be lifted to
reveal recent back issues of the journal
titles. Current newspapers are also found in
this section. Three months of back issues of
newspapers including Sunday editions may
be requested from the Circulation Desk Staff.
Magazines, journals and newspapers can not be
checked out. However, photocopies can be made
for ten cents per page.

Bound Periodicals Collection
The back issues of some magazines and journals
can be found in the Bound Periodical
Collection. The bound journals are located on
the first floor in alphabetical order in Ranges
36-45. Bound periodicals can not be checked out
from the library. Photocopies can be made for
ten cents per page.

The Microfilm Collection
Back issues of some newspapers, magazines and
journals are on microfilm. Newspapers, magazines
and journals in the microfilm format are arranged
alphabetically by title in cabinets located in
the Audiovisual section of the library. Microfilm
can not be checked out from the library.
Microfilm reader/printers are used to view
articles on microfilm and to make copies. Copies
are ten cents per page. Assistance with using the
microfilm machines can be obtained at the
Circulation Desk.

Second Floor
The second floor of the library contains the
portion of the General Circulating Collection
that has classification numbers beginning with
P-Z. The General Circulating Collection on the
second floor begins with Range 70 and goes
through Range 94. The second floor is designated
as the Quiet Study Area in the library and
absolutely no talking is permitted.
