The Aim Of The Presentation
  • The aim of this presentation is to teach others
the division method of chunking in 4 simple
steps. I hope you understand it!
  • It is called chunking because you take easy
chunks out of the starting number.

3
1
  • Say you have this sum
  • 172 divided by 4.
  • Write 172 at the top of your page.

172
/ 4 25
- 100
  • Think of an easy multiple of 4 which is close to,
but lower than 172 like 100 and write it
underneath 172. (This is your first chunk.)
  • Next to 100 write divided by 4 25. Then draw a
    line underneath.

(Click mouse to continue.)
4
2
  • Next subtract 100 from 172. You should get 72.
    Write 72 underneath.

172
/ 4 25
- 100
  • Think again of an easy multiple of 4 which is
close to, but lower than 72, like 40, and write
it underneath 72. (This is your second chunk.)

72
- 40
/ 4 10
32
  • Nearly there!..
  • As before write divided by 4 10. Then continue.

(Click mouse to continue.)
5
3
  • Now use your times tables to divide 32 by 4.

172
  • You should get 8.So write divided by 4 8
    (This is your third chunk.)

- 100 / 4 25
72
- 40 / 4 10
  • Since 4 X 8 is exactly 32, there wont be a
remainder. (So there wont be any more chunks.)

32
- 32 / 4 8
0
  • Last step...

(Click mouse to continue.)
6
4
  • Down the side you should have a 25, 10 and 8.

172
- 100 / 4 25
Chunk 1
  • Add them together and you get your answer!

72
- 40 / 4 10
Chunk 2
32
- 32 / 4 8
Chunk 3
  • The answer is 43!

43
