  • You will begin this game with an overview of
a school community before being confronted with a
conflict within the school. As you make choices
pertinent to the teacher and community, your
    progress with be tracked.
  • For example, if you make a decision in
favor of the community, you will see a bar like
    this
  • If you make a negative choice for the
teacher, you will see a bar like this

Introduction
  • You are Mr. Howard, the new principal at Roaming
Hills Elementary School in Alberta, Canada. The
    school community is predominantly homogenous,
consisting of Mennonite families who were born,
raised and then settled down in the area.
Christian ideals are highly valued and despite
the strong parental involvement in the school, a
large number of parents never graduated from high
school. Low German is the main language spoken in
the homes by families so children sometimes enter
Kindergarten with little or no knowledge of
English. Student discipline is important for
families, as is respect for their culture.
Overall, the school climate is extremely
positive, with parents as a whole very satisfied
with the education their children are receiving.

Introduction
  • As the new school year begins, rumblings
involving the new Kindergarten teacher start to
surface. With one year of substitute teaching in
an urban center under her belt, Miss Thatch is
    indeed
  • very different than the previous two
  • Kindergarten teachers. Unlike Mrs.
  • Martens and Miss Fehr, Miss Thatch
  • is not local, not religious and does not
  • speak Low German. Quiet and reserved,
  • Miss Thatch lacks confidence and feels
  • out of place in this close-knit community.

Emails Received
  • Mr. Gordon, the assistant principal at
Roaming Hills, came to you today with a sheet of
emails detailing parent complaints regarding the
    lack of discipline and student-teacher
    interactions in Ms. Thatchs classroom.

  • Unaware of potential parent biases toward
Miss Thatch, you seek out additional information
about the situation from Mr. Gordon. He tells
you that parents do not readily accept outsiders
in their community. He predicts Miss Thatch does
not fit the mold that parents envision for
their childrens teachers because she does not
speak low German or say grace before lunch.

Let Miss Thatch lead the conversation.
  • In allowing Miss Thatch to start the
conversation, she confides that she is
overwhelmed in her new position at the school.
Having only one year of substitute teacher
experience in an urban area, she tells you that
she has little expertise in working with students
from this rural community. She admits that while
the parents dont openly talk with her about
problems in the classroom, she feels as though
there might be something going on that is keeping
them distant. She openly asks for assistance in
    dealing with her new surroundings.
