Using Quotation Marks

• Use quotation marks at the beginning and the end
  of a direct quotation. In this case, your
  quotation may be dialogue between the characters
  or a direct quote which is not dialogue.
• Miss Postelli said, Someone is following me.

• If the explanatory words come at the beginning of
  the sentence, use a comma after the explanatory
  words.
• - Place the period at the end of a sentence
  inside the quotation marks.

• To write a quote within a quote, use single
  quotation marks to enclose the inside quotation.
  In these instances a double quotation mark
  follows the single quotation mark.
• Patrick Henry gave his famous speech in which he
  said, Give me liberty or give me death! before
  the Virginia Provincial Convention, Mr. Sloan
  told us.

• Mary reported, Jeff had trouble saying, She
  sells sea shells by the sea shore.

• When you use any type of quotation, make sure you
  identify who said or wrote the words.
• Sometimes a quotation is divided by explanatory
  words. Then each part of the quotation is
  enclosed by quotation marks. When the divided
  quotation is a single sentence, begin the second
  part with a small letter. If the second part
  begins a new sentence, use a capital letter.
• A healthy snack, Karen said, is granola with
  yogurt.
• There is entertainment at halftime, Jamie said.
  The marching band will perform.
