2 The Battel against climate change can not be
won without the worlds forests.

3 General Framework
Most nations and Turkey are facing shortages
of energy source . It is really necessary to find
domestic alternative energy sources in order to
reduce using of imported energy . For this
reason, It is important to study on alternative
energy.
4Why Bioenergy ?
- Prices of fossil fuels were steadily increasing
over the last five years with no indication of
downwards - using biomass promotes domestic energy, gaurantees
sustainability and creates also new markets for
farmers and foresters, many of whom currently
face economic hardship -
-
5Why Bioenergy ?
- The main reason of global warming and climate
change is fossil fuels - The world is looking for alternative renewable
local energy resources that pollute the
environment less.
6Turkeys forest map
7Turkeys Forest Resource
- Totally 21 million hectares forest land and this
comprises 27 of national territory. - Over 99 of the forests are state-owned.
8Turkeys Forest Resource
- Forests are generally located on mountainous
areas and they are usually natural and
semi-natural with high biodiversity value.
9Biomass Reserve in Turkey
- In our forests, 15 million m3 wood is produced
annually. In this calculation only the trunks of
the trees are taken into account. -
10- Biomass Reserve in Turkey
- Some of the biomass remains in forests is used by
forest villagers for heating, cooking and for
similiar uses. - Consequently it is considered that annual
- 7 million m3 biomass can be used for production
of biomass energy.
11Biomass usage in Turkey
-
- Çaycuma Paper Mill produces its daily 10 MW
energy demand from the wood barks which are the
waste of the materials used in paper production.

12Biomass usage in Gelibolu Forest Sub-District
-
- Wood residues, tree roots and another
materials collected from fired areas have been
used for producing heating energy in Gelibolu
Forest Sub-District Administration building and
public housing.

- heating energy by combustion of biomass

15Biomass usage in Kozak
Forest Sub-District
Stone Pinea covers the most part of the area in
Kozak Forest Sub-District.The most important
source of income for the villagers is obtained
from Stone Pinea cones production. The
sub-district building is heated with the
materials which are the waste of the cones
remains after production.

17Biomass usage in Forest Regional Directorate of
Bolu
Feeling need for Heating energy of Aydinpinar
Forest Sub-district administration building and
4 public housing have been provided with unused
residues after harvesting. It is estimated that
usage of 250 kg biomass per day will be enough to
heat both the administration building and the
public housings. Aladag Forest Distric
Directorate heats guesthouses by using biomass
which obtained unused residuse from forest.

22 General Directorate of Forestry 2009 Targets
About Bioenergy
- These activities started in 2008 and this
process will continue wherever possible and
lucrative.The system using harvesting
residues, stone cones, tree roots and the other
suitable materials for energy production will be
extended immediately amoung all rural
organization structures. - Identifying unusual harvesting residues in the
areas with high raw material potential and with
intensive forestry activities and facilitating
their use in biomass production.
232009 Targets About Bioenergy
- Encourange to use of alive and lifeless
materials which blocks the regeneration
activities , have fire risks and can cause
resource of harmfull insects, in a way that will
not harm the naturel balance and biodiversity. - Valorization of marginal lands which are
nonproductive agricultural areas will be builded
for enterpreneurs to invest in agroforestry and
energy forestry.
24 2009 Targets About Biomass
- Establishing of biomass power plant will
produce electric and heat energy from biomass and
in the sales of produced electric and heat
energy. - Private sector will be encouraged on producing
pellet by using unusuable residues from forests.
25 2009 Targets About Biomass
- Adaptation of the current legal arrangements
on biomass will be provided according to EU
norms. - The Scientific and Technological Research
Council of Turkey ( TÜBITAK ) projects about
searching bioenergy potantial regions will be
carried out with universities in collaboration.
