Interactive Video Narrative Using Gestures
  • This project attempts to experience video
    narratives interactively through
  • Intimate Interaction
  • Continuous Interaction
  • Narrative Depth and Coherence

3
Objectives
  • Intimate InteractionA touch based interface and
familiar gestures, recognized by a responsive
simulated character, create a more intimate
    interaction.
  • Continuous InteractionThe story does not wait
for the participant to make explicit decisions.
Narrative progression is influenced indirectly by
    the participants behaviour
  • Narrative Depth and CoherenceA believable
character, a meaningful story and a narrative
structure that is both variable and coherent

How the story engine determines the next scene?
  • Narrative structure
  • Protagonists attitude towards viewer
  • Protagonists emotions
  • Associations

7
Interaction cycle
  • Touching the Face
  • Triggers a reaction of the characters face
  • Influences the way the story unfolds
  • Story
  • Scenes are selected from the database according
    to the participants accumulated behaviour
pattern as deemed by the character
  • Narrative progression affects the characters
    attitude towards the participants behaviour

8
Summary
  • The interaction model integrates the participant
into the narrative as a character with a unique
    and active role.
  • The participant has to coax the protagonist into
telling her story and thus to influence her own
understanding of its meaning and conclusion.
  • Consequently, the participant is made aware of
the emotional effects that his or her chosen path
of interaction induce in the protagonist.
  • Thus, we hope, emerges a continuous interactive
    experience that is psychologically, emotionally
    and morally engaging.
