Title: QoS seminar

1
Multicast in Funet
  • Juha Oinonen
  • Development Manager, Funet services
  • first.lastname_at_csc.fi

2
Funet The Finnish University and Research
Network
  • Funet customer organizations (total 85)
  • universities (20)
  • polytechnics (25)
  • government research organizations (40)
  • Total user base 250 000 (estimated 2002)
  • Operated and developed by CSC

3
Funet Network Technologies
  • Routers Juniper M20/M10 (total 19)
  • some Cisco VXR/75xx/GSR for aggregation (phasing
    out)
  • Backbone links
  • SDH/WDM service (or fiber)
  • 2.5Gbit/s PoS, GbE, 622Mbit/s Packet-over-Sonet
  • external links (FICIX, International) at similar
    speeds
  • Customer access
  • Customers have and manage their own LAN/MAN
    routers
  • link GbE or less, typical Fast Ethernet or OC-3
    ATM
  • dark fiber where available/applicable, ATM
    service, other
  • many providers

4
Multicast in Funet Backbone
  • PIM v2
  • customer access mainly PIMv1/v2, occasional DVMRP
  • MSDP/MBGP, peers
  • NORDUnet (upstream provider)
  • FICIX no peers?
  • RP topology single RP in backbone (back-up
    planned)
  • couple of customers have their own RPs

5
Multicast Management Challenges
  • Problems
  • Network provider doesnt see traffic at
    application level!
  • Content provider/end-user doesnt understand the
    technology
  • Local (Campus) support in between
  • Result End-to-end hard to monitor and debug
  • understanding
  • communication
  • motivation

6
Multicast Monitoring Tools in Funet
  • Multicast beacons
  • status only, no statistics
  • MRM statistics
  • primitive multicast connectivity check
  • quality check not too usable (Cisco packet loss)
  • SDR monitoring
  • mainly off-line statistics
  • Places all over the world monitoring
  • primitive international connectivity check

7
Multicast penetration and use
  • Q1/2001 5..10 incoming international capacity
  • equal to some 10-20Mbit/s at that time
  • Q4/2002 snapshot less than 1Mbit/s multicast on
    external link
  • different method for measuring
  • one measurement only
  • Nov 2002 33 of customer interfaces is multicast
    enabled
  • of those actually used?
  • and to what extent?

8
Applications
  • Funet TV Eduskunta-kanava
  • Finnish Parliament, YLE and CSC
  • http//tv.funet.fi/ohjelmat/eduskunta/
  • Kiasma beeoff
  • http//www.kiasma.org/
  • Video delivery
  • group communications network ops, etc.
  • Lectures
  • Conference netcasting IETF, others

9
Future Challenges
  • Everybody has his own multicast-like
    application-layer solution
  • A standard method would be needed for bypassing
    non-multicast-enabled part of Internet
  • would generate operational pressure to
non-multicast-enabled parts of network to enable
    multicast
  • relatively straightforward for a single-source
    type applications
  • Broadcast video in Internet/LANs requires
    multicast
  • see above
  • IPv6 multicast effort?
  • extra burden or making things right from the
    beginning?
