3Undergraduate to Foundation training
- Medical degree course lasts five years- option
of intercalated degree - Exposed to all specialties throughout- direct
and indirect patient contact - through clinical placements and simulated
scenarios - Starting to think about career choices
- Beginning of final year- September- already
applying for Foundation- - what programmes to choose? Two years is a long
time.. - By December will know where they will be starting
training. -
- Graduation permitting!
4Foundation training
- Two year programme- 6 X 4 month blocks August
to August - Induction at each stage
- Generic programme- but exposure to specialties
other than medicine and - surgery to help inform future career choice
- Ongoing assessment- workplace based, educational
supervisors reports - At the end of year one- subject to
satisfactorily achieving the relevant - competencies- move from Provisional to Full
registration with the General - Medical Council.
- December of year 2- application for Specialty
Training - Or not..overseas? Further study?
5Scottish Medical Training
- Recruitment-
- Information- being fully aware of all the
facts/opportunities - Application- several at ST1 level across a number
of specialties - Shortlisted
- Interviewed
- Offered a place on a programme..
6Specialty Training
- August to August
- First placement allocated
- Induction
- Ongoing assessment- workplace based, educational
supervisors reports - Ten months from start of training- first Annual
Review of Competence Progression- ARCP - -formalised evaluation of
progress against a set of predefined
criteria
7Iterative process
- Satisfactory ARCP-progress to next training year
- Next Placement allocated- rotate August -
ongoing assessment- ARCP - Leading to Certificate of Completion of
Training-CCT - Final year of training already looking for a
Consultant post- eligible for interview six
months pre CCT - Consultant post- very similar to Specialty- but
even more established at personal level.no
longer the job for life .

number of options and decisions to make at each
stage. To assist with this it is the Medical
Directorates aim that Wherever you are in
Scotland either as a Training Programme
Director or Trainee the systems and processes
should be the same

and accurate information at any time
