31. Introduction
- Vientiane Municipality is capital city of Lao PDR
- Land area 3,92 km2 Population 639,326 (2003)
- 9 districts, but waste service 4 districts
- waste generated 235 t/day 150 t/day was
collected and disposal - Remaining 40 using traditional method disposal
causes problems to urban environment - The integrated Solid Waste Management Project was
approved 28/8/2000 (see figure 1)

- Waste 5,000 t/year increase
- Inefficient of waste collection and delays in
collection causes health and environment impacts - A lack of awareness and incentives for
communities to collect, separate, and dispose
waste - Burning of waste causes air pollution
- Lack of coordination between Govt, NGOs, private
sectors, local residents, etc.

- Aware of health risk with improper waste
collection and disposal - Reduce disposal waste 1,500t/year (2003)
- 38 Village Waste Banks established
- More than 100 recyclable waste collectors have
jobs or income - More urban hygiene
- Residents cooperation on waste collection

94. Conclusions
- Solid waste management is a significant and
urgent policy. We should take steps to solve it
immediately. - Public-Private Participation and local community
cooperation with external support (International
Agencies, NGOs) could be most appropriated model
for solid waste management in urban areas of Lao
PDR.
