- Waste Management.
- The Skills issue
- Summary
3Background
- Established by UK Government 18 months ago.
- Responsible for the UK civil public sector
nuclear legacy. - Sites and facilities built from 1940s onwards.
- Annual funding of 2Bn.
- Based in West Cumbria.
- Four regional offices covering 20 sites across
the UK.
4Statutory duties
- Ensure legacy is dealt with safely, securely and
cost effectively in ways that protect the
environment. - Promote competition in decommissioning and clean
up market. - Carrying out RD related to decommissioning.
- Ensure maintenance development of
decommissioning skills. - Promote best practice and secure value for money.
- Support the social and economic life of
communities around sites. - Generate Commercial revenue from asset base as
part of overall strategy

STAKEHOLDER STRATEGY
Inter-related strategies contribute to integrated
national strategy.
6The Scoping challenge-- Lifecycle Baseline
- Total scope and costs of ALL planned activities
to site end states- the LCBL - Common format , annual update
- Current total is 62.7Bn out to 2150
- Excludes Pu, Uranics, LLW and ILW repository
costs - Plan to cap in 2008
7LCBL challenges
- Is all the scope identified
- Are the solutions underpinned?
- Are the estimates robust?
- Has risk been properly addressed?
- Are dependencies clear
- All Part of current LCBL improvement project

18The Nuclear Materials / Waste Challenge
- Decisions needed on Pu and Uranics
- Spent fuel management optimisation?
- Additional LLW capacity?
- New build?
- Long term disposal solutions-(CoRWM)
19Long term waste management
- Assumption that ILW and HLW repositories will be
available from 2040 and 2075 respectively. - NDA plans include 100yr interim storage
- LLW capacity needs increasing for current reactor
fleet - 1.5 x existing capacity.
- Possibility for localised solutions welcomed,
subject to stakeholder agreement.
20The Skills Challenge
21 Skills Defining the need!
22Strategic Skills solutions
- Nuclear Institute and possible National Nuclear
Laboratory - National Graduate Scheme
- National Nuclear Skills Academy
23Nuclear Institute
- Joint initiative with University of Manchester
- Undertake world class nuclear-related research,
research training and post-graduate education - New academic posts in Decommissioning Engineering
and Radiation Sciences
