Title: Multipath Routing Using Distributed Proxy Servers

1
Multipath Routing Using Distributed Proxy Servers
  • Brett Wilson

2
Problem
  • Modern Applications utilize single TCP
    connections to transfer data
  • Single connections could be subject to
    bottlenecks that severely limit available
    bandwidth
  • Multipath routing has been proposed to increase
aggregate data rate by providing multiple routes
    around bottlenecks

3
How to Implement Multipath Routing?
  • Many Implementation Options
  • Network layer
  • Routers direct TCP packets across different
    routes
  • Transport and Application layer
  • Host application uses modifications to transport
layer to route packets across multiple distinct
    connections
  • Using Proxy Servers
  • Develop proxy server software to intercept
outgoing packets and distribute them across
    different routes

4
MP Routing Using Proxy Servers
5
MP Routing System Design
  • MP proxy software responsible for
  • Support of SOCKSv5 clients
  • Setup of multiple paths through other MP proxy
    servers as requested
  • Distribution of client data across the multiple
    paths
  • Receipt and sequential re-assembly of incoming
data from multiple paths and forwarding to client
    application

6
Multipath Protocol (MPP)
  • Development of a new protocol required to
    facilitate communication between the multipath
    proxy servers on the network
  • Protocol must provide
  • Coordination of MP connection setup and
    termination
  • Guaranteed, sequential delivery of the data
