  • A product is something that is produced naturally
    or by human effort or a direct result.
  • Production is the act or process of producing.
  • A business product is something that is produced
    through a serious work effort intended to
    maximize its business impact, while effectively
    using resources.
  • Product can be manufactured in factories, grown
    on a farm, or scribed by a pen. Business products
    should simply serve a serious business purpose
    to have an impact, and should be developed
    through effective use of resources including
    time, cost, materials, labor, and equipment.
  • From Americans experiences often providing
    products that were over schedule, over budget,
    and over priced they learn to appreciate
  • i.Dedicated and empowered work teams unencumbered
    by traditional management
  • delays.

    workers, so that decisions can be made by those
    who know the most about the problems.

    production in mind.

  • Many human efforts do not result in business
    products. For instance, a hobby often produces
    significant accomplishments but usually with
    little regard for optimizing resources including
    time and expenses.
  • Building the right things right describes the
    two goals of any product that is intended to be
    developed for successful business impact.
  • The product should serve its intended purpose
    well, meet the needs of its customers, and fall
    within the capabilities and charter of the
    company developing it. That is, it should be the
    right product.

  • It also should be developed with accept able
    quality and with an effective use of resources.
    That is, it should be built right.
  • For example, in the development of a pencil,
    considerations regarding making the right product
    might include the intended market segment
    (souvenir, youth, general public, or professional
    applications), the type of pencil
    (mechanical,plain wooden, or thin-lead drafting),
    distribution channel (wholesale, retail, or
    mail-order), and market competition.
  • Considerations for making the product right
    might include the material selection, design
    style, assembly and packaging equipment, labor
    costs, scrap losses, and development cycle time.
  • The development process can be a highly unique
    experience.
  • The product might have an unusual set of
    boundary conditions, associated who have not
    previously worked together, aggressive schedules,
    limited resources, fierce market competetion, and
    technical specifications that differ dramatically
    from those of other company products. Yet with in
    a single company, or even a single department,
    this scenario repeats it self over and over.

  • Todays designs are driven by cost, market
    trends, and customer service as well as by
    quality and technology.
  • The change has moved from a designer assigned to
    a project-based workforce.
  • Traditionally designers were trained in design
    fundamentals, the nature of materials, the
    capabilities of tools and equipment,
    manufacturing process.
  • Today, theses skills are expanded to include
    knowledge of market trends, safety, data
    acquisition and management, teaming concepts,
    packaging, distribution, and storage.
  • They faces a world of complex dependencies and
    interrelationships that involve federal and state
    regulations, environmental impacts, consumer
    perceptions, economic/social needs, cultural
    trends, and demographics impacting.
  • All these forces have changed the way we think
    about the world of design and fundamental nature
    of work.

  • Concurrent engineering is an integrated
    approach to design, production, and customer
    service that emphasizes to advantages of
    simultaneous, or concurrent, product design by
    utilizing individuals from various areas of the
    business in the up-front concept and design
    phase, with special emphasis on customers and
    their needs.
  • The focus is on all aspects of the design
    simultaneously, which is accomplished by the
    integration of people, processes, standards,
    tools, and methods to achieve a quality solution
    to the design problem.
  • Life cycle engineering the concept behind this
    model is that the entire life of a product should
    be evaluated at the beginning of the design
    process. the optimal design cannot be achieved
    unless performance, costs, reliability,
    maintainability, disposability, and market trends
    are addressed up front.
  • Built into this design process is the
    consideration for product replacement timelines,
    withdrawal and disposal of the product from the
    market, and product replacement.

  • Integrated product development is the process
    by which the product is designed and developed to
    satisfy all the conditions the product will
    encounter in its product life.
  • Evaluating all the factors that will impact the
    design during the product life at the initial
    design phase increases the likelihood that
    unforeseen circumstances will not accumulate and
    damage the products longevity in the marketplace.
  • Knowledge-based engineering - is the utilization
    of computer models to simulate the best-known
    engineering process.
  • Typically KBE is used by creating a set of
    engineering data. This data is comprised of
    components such as CAD data, manufacturing data,
    tooling data, and structural information. This
    data is then used in an integrated manner to
    develop a more detailed and comprehensive design
    plan.
  • The inclusion of so much information allows for
    better analysis and evaluation throughout the
    process.

  • Total quality management is a philosophy that
    calls for the integration of all organizational
    activities to achieve the goal of serving
    customers.
  • It seeks to achieve this goals by establishing
    process standards, maximizing production
    efficiency, implementing quality improvement
    processes, and employing integrated teams to
    effectively design customer-driven products.
  • Total quality management strives ti eliminate all
    non value-added activities in the production
    process and to achieve satisfaction of all its
    customers, both internal and external.
