• Mother converted to Catholicism

• Graduated from Oxford 1915

• Joined up and went to war--World War I
• Became Professor of Anglo-Saxon at Oxford

• Originally written for his children
• The Hero is a Hobbit named Bilbo

• Goes on a journey to destroy the Ring of Power

• Gets into many adventures
• Destroys the Ring at Mount Doom with the help of
  Gollum
