    Intern

    Holly Hansen

2
Goal
  • To increase positive behavior of students and
    teachers
  • To decrease negative behaviors
  • To create a safe, positive learning environment.

3
Rationale
  • Centerville teachers asked for a consistent,
effective, positive school wide discipline system
that would increase positive behaviors and
    decrease negative behaviors.
  • A school/community survey also reflected a need
for a consistent school wide discipline system.

4
Results of Teacher
and Student Surveys(Numbers indicate of
People Surveyed)
  • Data being used are
  • Area of Concern of Teachers in Classroom
  • Area of Concern of Teachers in Non-Classroom
    Settings
  • Individual Area of Concern of Students

5
Trends and changes in data indicators
  • There has been a marked increase in the number of
blue slips and other positive indicators and a
decrease in white slips or consequential
    indicators.
  • In one school year attendance increased from 85
    to 96.
  • We need a system to compile specific positive
data by dates, teachers and gender.

6
Implementation
  • We conducted staff development.
  • We created spirit assemblies to teach and model
positive behaviors. We implemented school wide
themes to motivate staff participation (Wild
About Learning, We The People, Soar for Success).
  • Staff involvement/participation is encouraged
    and recognized. We celebrate success!
  • Traditional data sources used are attendance
    records, test scores, and grades.
  • Customized data sources used are the 200 club,
Excellent Eagle, tokens, and lunch with the
    principal.

7
Final data
  • Positives grew from 87 of students receiving
positives to 100 students by last term.
  • Positives are helping students to decrease
    negative behavior.

8
Plans for adjustment
  • Introduce and motivate the school community to
the new theme The Hero Within.
  • Implement think time and check in, check out.
  • Collect specific data of positive reinforcements
    in every classroom.

9
Discussion
  • Collecting the data was time consuming and
    challenging. However, the data proved
    beneficial.
  • Data showed improvement in student behavior.
  • Changing behavior relies upon changing attitude.
  • We wish we would have known that there was no
financial aid available or assistance for data
collection provided for first year schools (data
assistant was provided on a limited basis at the
    end of the school year).
