Title: Make Your Computer Run Faster

1
Make Your Computer Run Faster
  • With Michael Shepard

2
The Basics
  • Defragment your drive to make it faster
  • Use ScanDisk to check for errors
  • Use Disk Cleanup to get rid of unneeded files

3
Defragmenting
  • Defragmenting rearranges files so they load
    faster.
  • Its like reorganizing your office.
  • If a file that you need is on the other side of
the office it takes you a long time to get your
    work done.
  • If files on the computer are closer together, it
takes less time to load them.

4
How to Defragment
3. Wait for it to finish!
  • 1. Hit Start gtgt Programs gtgt Accessories gtgt System
    Tools gtgt Disk Defragmenter
  • 2. Select your hard drive and press OK or
    Defragment.

5
ScanDisk
  • ScanDisk scans your drive for errors and fixes
    them.
  • ScanDisk will NOT fix
  • Bad programming.
  • If the programmer messed something up, theres
nothing you can do to fix it.
  • Hard drive failure.
  • If your hard drive fails, then you cant access
    the program anyway!

6
How to Use Scandisk
  • 1. Open My Computer, right-click your hard drive,
    and hit Properties.
  • 2. Go to the Tools tab and hit the Check Now
    button for error-checking.

7
How to Use Scandisk
3. Hit Standard. If you have serious errors, use
Thorough. Press Start and wait for it to finish.
  • 3 (XP). Check both boxes and answer Yes when it
asks you to scan at restart. Restart your
    computer.

8
Disk Cleanup
  • Disk Cleanup automatically searches for
unnecessary files and eliminates them from your
    computer.
  • If youre running out of space, this is the place
    to go.

9
Cleaning Up
  • 1. Hit Start gtgt Programs gtgt Accessories gtgt System
    Tools gtgt Disk Cleanup.
  • 2. After it finishes scanning for files, it will
give you a list of what you can eliminate. I
recommend you check everything except Compress
    Old Files

10
Remember!
  • Do these things once a month to keep your
    computer fast and healthy.

11
Turn Off Sound Channels
  • Sound channels carry different types of sounds to
your sound card. The more you turn off, the
    faster your system gets.

12
Turn Off Sound Channels
  • Hit Start gtgt Programs gtgt Accessories gtgt
    Entertainment gtgt Volume Control.
  • Uncheck anything you dont need.
  • MIDI is for musical sound files.
  • WAVE OUT is for normal sounds.

13
Turn off System Sounds
  • System sounds are the irritating noises that go
off whenever you do something wrong or the
computer is starting up. You can turn these off
    if you want.

14
Turn Off System Sounds
  • Open Control Panel.
  • Double-click Sounds.
  • Go to the Sounds tab.
  • Hit No Sounds in the theme list.

15
Now your System is QUIET
16
Disabling Visuals (XP)
  • Windows XPs visuals are nice to look at, but
they use a lot of memory.

17
Disabling Visuals (XP)
  • Right-click my computer.
  • Hit properties.
  • On the Advanced tab, hit the first properties
    button.
  • On the visual effects tab uncheck any visual
effects you do not notice or need.

18
Turn Off Indexing
  • Indexing takes your files and makes a search
encyclopedia for your computer to use when you
are looking for a file. Its supposed to make
searches faster, but it does not seem like it.

19
Turn off Indexing
  • Open Control Panel.
  • Go to Add/Remove Programs.
  • Click Windows Setup or Add/Remove Windows
    Components.
  • Uncheck Indexing Service in the list.
  • Hit Next or OK.

20
Disable Startup Programs
  • You probably start your computer and wait for a
million icons to load into your taskbar. You can
eliminate these by going into each program. If
you cant find the setting in the program follow
    these steps...

21
Disable Startup Programs
  • Hit Start gtgt Run
  • Type msconfig and press ENTER.
  • Go to the Startup tab.
  • Uncheck programs you know you dont need.
  • You can also uncheck items on the Services tab,
    but be very careful.

22
Clear Page File at Shut Down (XP)
  • There is a file on the hard drive called the
paging file (PF). If Windows runs out of
temporary memory (RAM), some data goes to this
file until Windows needs it. If you clear this
file, you can increase speed and security.

23
Clear Page File at Shut Down (XP)
  • Start gtgt Run
  • Type regedit and press ENTER
  • Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\
    Session Manager\Control\Memory Management
  • On the right panel, right-click a blank spot and
    hit New gtgt DWORD
  • Name it ClearPageFileAtShutdown
  • Double-click it
  • Type a one in the value box
  • Hit OK

24
User Profile Hive Cleaner (UPHClean) (XP)
  • Windows stores settings in a database called the
registry. Sometimes information goes in the wrong
places, so it takes Windows a longer time to log
off. This program moves the information back into
    the right place.

25
UPHClean (XP)
  • Type in UPHClean on Google and hit Im Feeling
    Lucky.
  • Download and install the file. It will start
working after you restart your computer.
  • You will never see this program, because it runs
    in the background.

26
Fun Stuff
  • Merlin
  • Maze Game
