Saving and Converting your Files
  • For Transfer to a Dell

AppleWorks- Word processing
  • Locate the file you wish to convert
  • Go to File-Save As
  • From the pop-up menu for File Format select RTF
  • If .RTF is not on the end of the file name, then
    you must add it.(Example sample.RTF)
  • Click the Save button

AppleWorks Spreadsheet
  • Locate the file you wish to convert
  • Go to File-Save As
  • From the pop-up menu where it says File Format
    select Excel Win 97, 2000, XP 2002 spr
  • If the file name does not have .xls, then you
    must add it. (Example sample.xls)
  • Click Save

AppleWorks Database
  • Open the database you wish to convert
  • Change the layout of the database to view it as a
    List
  • Go to Edit - Select All on the menu
  • Go to Edit-Copy

AppleWorks Database
  • Create a new spreadsheet in AppleWorks
  • On the the spreadsheet in the cells in row 1
    recreate the field names that were in your
    database.

AppleWorks Database
  • Click in Cell A2
  • Go to Edit-Paste
  • Then save this spreadsheet just as you did before
    depending on whether you are using AppleWorks 6
    or 5

Microsoft Office Files
  • If the computer you are using has Microsoft
    Office on it you can transfer word and excel
    files to a Dell
  • Be sure that if it is a word processing file that
    you save it as rtf and it must have .rtf on the
    end of the file name (Example sample.rtf)
  • If it is a spreadsheet, be sure you have .xls on
    the end of the file name (Example sample.xls)

  • Once your files have been converted you should
    create a folder for them and name the folder
    something you will recognize .(Ex. My stuff or
    Bonnas files, etc.)
  • Then drag all the files you have converted and
    want to transfer into this folder.
  • Insert your flash drive into a USB slot on your
    Macintosh Computer
  • Drag your converted files and drop them on top of
    the flash drive icon you see on your computer
    screen
  • Double click the flash drive icon to see if your
    files are all there and close the window.
  • Drag the flash drive icon to the trash and remove
    the flash drive

  • To upload your files to your new computer insert
    the flash drive in a USB port on your Dell
  • Log onto your Dell and Right-click on My
    Computer
  • Select Explore from the menu that appears

  • A window will open like the one below
  • Locate your Flash Drive
  • It will say Removable Disk (E)

Transferring your files to your Dell
  • Double click on the icon for your Flash Drive
  • Locate the folder that has all the files you
    converted
  • Drag it and drop it on the folder that appears in
    the left hand window that says My Documents
  • If you open your documents folder you should be
    able to locate the folder with your files and
    open it to see the files you transferred
