SAS Safety of Airport Structures
  • Highlights
  • Started in December 2006 (12-month duration)
  • Funded by EPCIP 2006 - European Programme for
    Critical Infrastructure Protection - European
Commission - Area Freedom Security, and Justice
  • Total budget 500.000,00
  • Objective to assess and optimize a barrier
configuration to be used by ENAV to protect
    airport infrastructures

3
SAS Safety of Airport Structures
  • Team Partners
  • AMRA (project leader, research center - Italy)
  • ENAV (end-user - Italy)
  • WAI (engineering firm - UK)
  • ATP (FRP manufacturer - Italy) and,
  • Saint Gobain Vetrotex España (supplier - Spain).

SAS Safety of Airport Structures
  • Activities
  • Design of a precast solution to achieve low-cost
    installation and maintenance
  • Design of steel-free system to improve
    radio-transparency properties (including
    foundation)
  • Assessment of radio-transparency properties of
system through numerical analysis and physical
    tests
  • Structural analysis and mechanical tests of
    system components and,
  • Blast analysis and tests to verify capability to
    withstand dynamic loads and,
  • Demonstration

SAS Safety of Airport Structures
  • Conclusions
  • Project consisted of complex design of a civil
    structure taking into account unusual
    requirements
  • Unconventional dynamic load scenario was
considered and specific mechanical tests were
    performed
  • Optimization of the system was conducted
    considering installation and maintenance
    requirements
  • Numerical analysis and lab tests were carried out
in order to verify radio-transparency properties
    of system

12
SAS Safety of Airport Structures
  • Conclusions (cont.)
  • Blast characterization of the structure was
performed through numerical analysis and field
    test
  • Project focused on defining a protocol with input
from owner, engineer, researcher, and material
    supplier and manufacturer
  • Field demonstration confirmed the success of the
    project and,
  • This experience can be replicated for similar
    endeavors related to security problems.
