What is periodontal disease?
  • Chronic inflammation of the gums that leads to
loss of connective tissue and alveolar bone that
hold the teeth in place characterize periodontal
disease. This condition leads to recession and
bleeding of the gingiva, abscesses, caries of the
exposed root and, ultimately, loss of teeth.
  • Saving those teeth is important.Dentures are
    uncomfortable.More importantly, preliminary
evidence suggests that the inability to chew
properly as a result of missing or loose teeth
may be a risk factor for aging and Alzheimers
    disease.Improper mastication also compromises
digestive function, setting the stage for the
development of all types of problem secondary to
    malnutrition.
  • Fortunately, there are holistic alternatives that
can be used with the old standbys of regular
    brushing,flossing,and professional cleaning to
    hold periodontitis in check

4
Nature of the disease
  • The exact cause and course of periodontal disease
    are elusive.
  • Research has focused on the oral bacteria known
as periodontopathogens that have been isolated
from the fluid in pockets around afflicted teeth.
However, studies have sometimes found the same
microbes in healthy mouth thus,a pathogen that
    is specifically responsible for periodontitis
    has not been identified.
  • Nonetheless, research shows that many
    antibacterial plants and antibiotic curtail
inflammation, bleeding , and bone loss in
patients with periodontal disease and itis clear
that using antimicrobial agent can improve the
    outcome in periodontal disease.
  • Using antibiotic present problems that changing
the bodys response to oral pathogens is a more
effective approach than trying to kill various
    oral bacteria.

5
Allopathic treatment in disease
  • Low doses of tetracycline and other antibiotic
    would control oral pathogens.However this
    antibiotic use threatened to create
antibiotic-resistant microbes. At the same time,
some studies showed that professional cleaning
could be as effective for reducing periodontitis
    as the antibiotics.
  • The saliva of healthy individuals contain more of
an inactive procollagenase while the saliva in
patients with disease contains more activated
    collagenase that breaks collagen down.
  • Cleaning or root planning is helpful for treating
periodontal disease because it reduces the amount
    of activated collagenase in saliva.
  • Given this problems.holistic alternatives are a
    beter choice for treating periodontitis.

6
Holistic treatment in disease
  • Herbs can promote healing by stabilizing collagen
and lessening inflammation in the mouth. The
basic treatment isthe topical application of
    antimicrobial,anti-inflammatory.
  • The idea is to deliver the herbs gently to gum
pockets, allowing the herbs to improve the
    microenvironment around afflicted teeth.
  • Consistent brushing with a soft bristled brush ,
flossing and frequent professional cleaning are
all necessary for achieving a good outcome.
Toothbrushes should be changed every few months
to avoid reintroducing pathogens into healing
    areas of the mouth.

7
The topical formula of disease
  • We suggest that 2-3 ml of an herbal formula be
added to the irrigation tank for each treatment.
This formula consist of equal parts of
  • Yerba mansa ( Anemopsis californica ) root
  • Skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora) herb.
  • Gotu kola (Centella asiacita) also known as
    indian pennywort.

Yerba mansa
  • Sauruacea family
  • Using among Native Americans and hispanics in
    new mexico, California, Arizona
  • Many practioners report that yerba mansa is
invaluable for treating severaly inflamed gum
because the herb strong astringent action.
  • Reduce pain of inflamed gum
  • Herb can be applied directly to developing
    abscess Echinacea (Echinacea angustifolia) root
often pereventing the abscess from getting worse.

10
Scullcap
  • Mouthwash in china.
  • Scullcap repotedly has a long history of use as a
mouthwash in china. Skullcap was nearly as
effective as tetracycline for reduced oral
    periodontopathogens in one research study
  • Most herbal practioners consider fresh skullcap
herb to be much more effective than dried.

11
Gotu kola
  • Wound healing
  • Plastic surgery-produce a type of collogen
  • Decreasing the inflammatory reaction
  • Heal the inflamed tissue of mouth
  • Has no known adverse effect
  • Increased thyroid metabolism in hypothyrodism
    patient
  • Treating varicose veins and edema of the limb

12
Internal herbal support
  • In addition to the topical formula, herbs and
lifestyle changes should be used to change
conditions that create an environment that create
an environment that feeds and sustains an
    imbalance in the flora
  • Michael moore-stres is a root cause of oral
    disease
  • Saliva and adrenalin amount-changing the ph of
    the mouth
  • Scientist have found strong link between stress
    and periodontal disease

13
  • meditiation or yoga reduce stress- Increasing
    saliva excretion and healhty digestion
  • Smoking
  • Green tea- antioxidant

14
Internal tonic
  • The internal formula should contain a bitter
unless the patient has copious saliva and red
    tongue
  • Gentian (Gentiana lutea) root
  • Increase salivation
  • Improving nutrient digestion

Yellow duck
Oregan grape
  • Yellow duck (Rumex crispus) root,
  • Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) root
  • Oregan grape (Mahonia aquiffolium) root
  • Ginger (Zingeber officinale) root is a digestive
stimulant that does not taste bitter and it also
    has anti-inflammatory properties.

Avenita
  • Skullcap is used to strengthen the nerves.it may
reduce the anxiety and will help skin healing.
Skullcap has a protective effect on the liver .
  • Other nervines used to reduce stress are oat
(Avena sativa) seed, kava (Piper methysticum) rot
and adaptogens such as american ginseng (Panax
    quinquefolium) root
