What is a slave?
  • A Slave is forced to work for an 'employer'
  • They are often humans of a different nationality,
religion or race than the dominant group
  • They are treated like property, bought and sold
  • Treatment is often inhuman
  • They have no freedom to move

History
  • Slavery in the US started in 1618, but it was
    illegal
  • The first slaves were brought to Virginia by
    British settlers
  • Soon they realized that Africans are good workers
    because of their dark skin
  • In 1641 the first law to own a slave was
    introduced in Massachusetts
  • In 1712 slaves started the first revolt and other
revolts followed but they were not effective
  • In 1808 it was forbidden to import African slaves
    but smuggling continued
  • In 1861 a Civil war had begun and America was
divided into two parts The North, against
slavery and the South, supporting slavery
  • In 1865 slavery was forbidden but discrimination
of the blacks and slavery still goes on ...

Modern Slavery
  • Slavery still exists today despite the fact that
slavery is prohibited1 in most of the countries
  • During 2001, at least 700,000 and potentially as
many as 4 million men, women and children
    worldwide were slaves
  • Women are bound in prostitution
  • Children are trafficked3 between West African
countries and they also have to fight and work,
    for example, in factories
  • Men are forced to work (on plantations etc.)
  • For example in Brazil, some rich great land
owners force poor people to work on their fields
    without payment

Vocabulary 1. prohibited verboten 2.
Abolition Aufhebung 3. trafficked gehandelt

Different Types of Slavery Today
  • Early and forced marriage affects women and girls
who are married without choice and they are
forced to live like a slave.
  • Forced labour affects people who are illegally
    recruited by individuals, governments or
political parties and forced to work -- usually
under threat of violence or other penalties.
  • Slavery by descent means that people are either
born into a slave class or are from a 'group'
that society views as suited to being used as
    slave labour.
  • Trafficking is the transport or trade of women,
children and men from one area to another to
force them to work as a slave
  • Worst forms of child labour affects an estimated
179 million children around the world in work
that is harmful to their health and welfare.
