Mission Statement
  • Parkwood High Schools Mission Statement is to
    provide and facilitate a level of learning for
    students that will enable them to lead productive
    and fulfilling lives and to make positive
    contributions to their communities, nation and
    world.

Block Schedule
  • PWHS operates on a bock schedule. Students
    attend four classes each day and receive 90
    minutes of instruction for each class. Our
    classes are semester long classes with the
    exception of English I and World History
    skinnies. These are year long classes that meet
    for 45 minutes per day.
  • Attendance is critical. Students do not receive
    credit for a semester long class if they miss
    more than 7 days.

Credits, Grades and Quality Points
Credits
  • High School Students earn a credit for each class
    they complete with a passing grade.
  • Students have the opportunity to earn 8 credits
    each year.
  • A grade below 70 is a failing grade. Credit will
    not be given for a failing grade.
  • A total of 28 credits are required for
    graduation.

  • Meet the requirements for the Future-Ready Core
    Course of Study
  • Earn 28 credits
  • Pass NC Computer Assessment
  • Pass 5 EOC exams (Level III or IV)
  • Algebra I, Biology, English I, Civics and
    Economics, U.S. History
  • Graduation Project
  • 5-8 page research paper, a portfolio, a product
    a presentation

Your Role as a Freshman
  • Earn the best grades you can. Your ninth grade
    marks will be included in your Grade Point
    Average (GPA).
  • Get involved in extracurricular activities to
    build a resume for college applications.
  • Do your best on the Algebra I and English I EOC
    remember, you need to score a level III or IV.
  • Begin researching careers. Ask questions about
    careers and jobs you may be interested in
    conduct online research.
  • Start thinking about and collecting information
    for topics for your graduation project.

High School Registration
  • Registration will be done online. Counselors
    from PWHS will assist you in the PWMS computer
    labs on registration day. Prior to registration
    day you will receive a packet of information
    including the Program of Studies, a practice
    registration form, and a letter of instruction.
    Please go over these materials with your parent
    or guardian, complete the practice registration
    card, bring the card with you on your day to
    register.

Typical 9th Grade Schedule
  • English I
  • World History
  • Algebra (in 1 semester or 2)
  • Earth Science
  • PE
  • 2 or 3 Electives
  • You will earn 8 credits!

English World History
  • All Freshman are required to take English I and
    World History. Most of these classes are offered
    as skinnies or year long courses taught for 45
    minutes per day. There are exceptions and some
    students will take Eng. I and World History on a
    block schedule (one semester taught for 90
    minutes per day). The exceptions would be for
    students entering Parkwood High School mid year
    or for students who want to take one or both of
    the classes at the honors level.

Algebra
Mathematics
  • Most students take Algebra their freshman year
    and the majority of those students will take two
    semesters to complete Algebra I. The text book is
    covered in two separate classes Fundamentals of
    Algebra is taught the first semester and covers
    the first half of the textbook. Algebra I is
    taught second semester and covers the second
    half of the text book. Students earn one credit
    for Fundamentals of Algebra and one credit for
    Algebra I. At the end of Algebra I students will
    take the EOC exam and must earn a level III or IV
    to meet the graduation requirement.
  • Students who are exceptionally strong in math
    may take Algebra I in one semester. This course
    moves quickly and covers the entire book in one
    semester.

Mathematics
  • Geometry
  • Students who have earned a credit for Algebra I
    in 8th grade can take Geometry in their Freshman
    year.

Science
  • Three units of science are required for
    graduation Earth and Environmental, Biology and
    a physical science. Students typically take Earth
    Science in their freshman year however, students
    can take Honors Earth Science and/or Honors
    Biology I if they are taking Honors Geometry.
    Students who take Honors Geometry and Honors
    Biology are on track to take AP Earth Science in
    their Junior year.

Health and Physical Education
  • All 9th grade students are required to take
    Health and PE. This course will fulfill the one
    unit of H/PE that is required for graduation.
    Students must pass this classes prior to taking
    any other PE classes.

  • Freshman can take either two or three electives
    depending on whether Algebra is taken in one
    semesters or two.
  • 9th grade electives can be found under the
    following subjects/categories English,
    Health/PE, Social Studies, Second Languages, Fine
    Arts and Misc., CTE, JROTC

Grade Point Average
  • Your GPA is a measure of your academic
    achievement. It is important for college
    admissions and scholarships. (College may seem a
    long way off but your Freshman grades really do
    count!)
  • You determine your GPA by the number of quality
    points you earn for each class. Points are
    awarded based on the grade you earn
  • The quality points vary based on whether the
    class is a regular class, an honor class, or an
    AP class.

Driver Education
  • You must be 14 ½
  • You must present a copy of your birth certificate
  • The program is 18 days. Students can not miss
    more than 3 days.
  • Classes run from 345-530 M-F
  • Sign up dates are listed on our website
  • In order to apply for your permit you must be
    passing at least 3 out of 4 or your classes.

Sports
  • PWHS is committed to athletics and offers the
    following sports Football, Volleyball, Golf,
    Cross Country Track, Soccer, Basketball,
    Swimming, Wrestling, Baseball, Softball and
    Spring Track .
  • All rising 9th graders are eligible to
    participate in Fall sports. In order to continue
    to participate in the athletics program students
    must pass three of the four classes be in
    attendance at least 85 from the previous
    semester.
