Title: Starter think about these questions, you can jot ideas in the back of your book

1
Starter think about these questions, you can
jot ideas in the back of your book!
  • What is an acid?
  • What is an alkali?
  • What is the difference between an base and an
    alkali?
  • What does neutral mean?
  • What is neutralisation?

2
Objectives
  • To understand and be able to use key science
words (acid, alkali, neutral, base and
    neutralisation).
  • To know the general equation for neutralisation
and be able to use this to generate specific
    equations.
  • To be able to add details onto a data logged
    graph of neutralisation.

3
pH scale
4
Neutralisation
  • Measure 20cm3 of hydrochloric acid into a beaker.
  • Add a few drops of UI soln.
  • Using a pipette, add sodium hydroxide to the
    acid.
  • Observe.

5
Set up the data logger
  • Log onto the computer.
  • Take a temperature probe and put it into the USB
    drive.
  • Take the pH probe and put it into the USB drive.
  • Start, programmes, Vernier Software, LoggerPro
    3.4.2.

6
Neutralisation
  • Measure 30ml of HCl into a beaker.
  • Add a little squirt of UI soln.
  • Put the probe into the ice.
  • Start collecting the data.
  • Add NaOH slowly until you have added 35ml.
  • Stop collecting the data and autoscale.
  • Print your graph.

7
Neutralisation
  • Mark in red pen where the graph is acid.
  • Mark in blue pen where the graph is basic.
  • Make in green pen where neutralisation happens.
  • Contrast the temperature and the pH graph what
    do they show you?

8
Which of these are acids?
9
Which is true?
  • All alkalis have a pH lt7
  • All alkalis have a pH gt7
  • All alkalis have a pH 7

10
Which of these is neutral?
11
What is made is made when an acid and alkali
react?
  • Water
  • Salt and water
  • Carbon dioxide, salt and water

12
Which of these is an alkali?
13
Which one of the following do alkalis and bases
not have in common?
  • They are the opposites to acids
  • They have a pH greater than 7
  • They dissolve in water

14
Which is the formula for phosphoric acid?
  • H3PO4
  • H3PO4
  • HPO4

15
What is the name of the salt produced when sodium
hydroxide reacts with nitric acid?
  • Table salt
  • Sodium chloride
  • Sodium nitrate

16
What type of medicine is a cure for indigestion?
  • Antacid
  • Strong alkali
  • Milk
  • Neutral
