Title: Mapping the Healthcare Improvement Research Needs of Scottish Healthcare Managers SHCMs: Developing

1
Mapping the Healthcare Improvement Research Needs
of Scottish Healthcare Managers (SHCMs
Developing a Research Agenda
2
CSO Small Grants Project
  • Consortium bid of Scottish Universities
  • Edinburgh
  • Aberdeen
  • Glasgow
  • St. Andrews / Social Dimensions of Health
    Institute
  • 12 months project
  • PIs Lorna McKee, Moira Fishbacher Smith, Huw
Davies, Jill Schofield, a Research Assistant

3
Research Aims
  • 1.There is a need to elicit the research needs of
practising managers vis a vis what they want to
know / get access to, in respect of healthcare
    management and health organisation research.
  • 2.A further need for these requirements to be
communicated and shared with the HEIs in Scotland
and a modus operandi established about the
    concomitant knowledge mobilisation
  • 3. There is uncertainty about the research
capacity and capabilities of SHCMs and their
    institutions

4
Indicative Research Questions
  • What prompts HCMs to seek information from
research based sources ? What timescales pertain
? Is their information seeking behaviour
    strategic or operational
  • What contingent factors pertain to the above ?
  • How do HCMs connect with each other to access the
policy / management / OR research communities ?

5
  • How are their research needs communicated to the
    HEIs and other research bodies.
  • What are the institutional barriers to such
    communication ?
  • Are there any regional variations to these
    patterns ?
  • What is the level of research competence and
capacity at the service delivery level ?

6
Conceptual Frameworks and Theoretical Underpinning
  • Research Utilization and knowledge mobilization (
meta analysis Mittan et al, 2007)
  • The Information seeking behaviour of managers
(Lomas, 2007 Lavis, 2003) and every day life
    information seeking ( Godbold, 2006)
  • Health Improvement Science. ( Berwick and Nolan,
    1998) co-production element between researchers
    and practitioners.

7
Methods
  • Substantive questions
  • Web based survey
  • Interviews
  • Process questions plan to use two specific
    reflective techniques
  • Self completed diaries
  • Appreciative Inquiry
  • Workshops

8
Issues and Challenges
  • Cohort selection
  • Cohort commitment to diary completion maybe use
    audio diaries the diary room
  • Making inroads to the HEIs when actual system is
    so fragmented

9
Outputs
  • To produce a research agenda concerning the
    management and organisation of Scottish
    healthcare
  • To work together with CSO ( and other funding
bodies) to use the results to inform future
research specifications and agree a modus
    operandi for collaboration
  • To produce a framework for good practice for
    collaboration between HEIs and HCMs
  • To produce an audit of the research capacity /
capabilities of SHCMs and their institutions.
