4
FOUL RECOGNITION AND MISCONDUCT
  • First, you must recognize fouls.
  • Careless Ordinary foul.
  • And
  • Reckless Cautionable Offense.
  • Dangerous Sendoff Offense.

5
Theres Smoke But No Fire!
  • Why have cautions and sendoffs?
  • Ask the participants, what will they say?
  • Coach To punish serious misconduct!
  • Player Only if its against the other team!
  • Referee I use cautions and sendoffs for match
control and for the safety of the players.

6
WHATS REALLY THE TRUTH?
  • TIMING TIMING TIMING...
  • Cards used at the right time to correct
misconduct will make an impact help control the
    game.
  • Cards used for the wrong purpose or at the wrong
time or too many or too few
  • will be ineffective in controlling the match.

7
TIMING (continued)
  • EARLY EARLY EARLY
  • Sets the bar for what is acceptable and what
    isnt.
  • Reinforces to the players that they will be
    protected.
  • Shows the tolerance level of the referee to his
    A.R.s.
  • Puts physical players on notice.

8
TIMING (Continued)
  • Cautions used at the end of the match
  • Does not change behavior.
  • Tempers are already flaring.
  • Bad behavior has been observed and has not been
    dealt with.
  • It may help the match from deteriorating further.

9
MISCONCEPTIONSABOUT MISCONDUCT
  • Dissent might keep their mouths shut, but wont
stop them from pushing or shoving.
  • Persistent Infringement look at the numbers.
  • Whos it against?
  • Could 3 fouls be too many within a short time
    span?

10
TACTICAL MISCONDUCTDont Let This Undermine Your
Credibility
  • Delays Restart
  • Kicking ball away
  • Not part of a natural motion of play
  • Frustration shot
  • Keeper holding for more than 7 seconds?
  • Entering/Leaving field w/o permission
  • Getting a drink
  • Correction of equipment
  • Momentary Injury

11
TIMING, TIMING, TIMING
  • Was someone hurt or seriously injured?
  • Where are you in the game?
  • Surroundings
  • Time left
  • Score
  • What level of match is it?
  • Rules of the competition.

12
TIMING, TIMING, TIMING
  • Use preventive refereeing
  • Position
  • Closer to the bench may be near the lions
    den
  • Inside the penalty area
  • Defending third
  • Attacking third

13
TACTICAL FOULS
  • What is a tactical foul?
  • Tripping, pushing, grabbing shirt usually
    against an attacker
  • Standing in front of the ball on a DFK or IFK,
    FTRD
  • Is this okay? What about fairness?
  • FIFA MOTTO For the Good of the Game
  • US SOCCER MOTTO My Game is Fair Play

14
FAIRNESS
  • Teams are willing to commit fouls and give up a
DFK or IFK, rather than a goal.
  • The team that gets the DFK or IFK feels cheated.
  • The point?
  • A caution may restore some balance, preventing a
    player from doing it again.
  • Eases the frustration of the victim and may
    lessen the possibility of retaliation

15
NUMBER OF FOULS AND CARDS
  • Numbers of cautions may diminish the value of the
    caution
  • Ask yourself
  • Did the players correct their actions as a result
of the misconduct, or did the players continue
    the misconduct?

16
NUMBER OF FOULS AND CARDS
  • Did the player accept the caution, or was it
    contested?
  • Did the caution help with game control?
  • Should you have shown a red card or threatened to
    show it?
  • Talk to the players knock it off! Quit it!
    Enough!

17
Lets Put All of Our Cards on the Table
  • Positioning lends credibility
  • Segregate if possible
  • Use of whistle
  • Advantage Clause?
  • Less said, best said!
  • Remember TLC, wait for my whistle correct
    restart
  • ARs keep their eyes on the field!

18
