No Flu 4 U
Collaborative Project Abstract
Students Give the Flu Immunizations
  • This collaborative project was to prevent
influenza on the MSUM campus in Northern
Minnesota and to promote the flu vaccination by
offering the immunization in various campus
    locations.
  • The collaborative project included students and
faculty in the School of Nursing and Healthcare
Leadership (i.e., nursing and community health)
and students and staff at the campus health and
    wellness center (i.e., wellness educators).

Goal 2 Service Learning
Marketing To Parents
  • The Nursing Department became aware of students
lack of flu immunizations last year when two of
our clinical sites were quarantined because of
    flu.
  • Faculty had encouraged students to get a flu shot
because of risk factors such as stress, lack of
sleep, not eating properly, and shared living
    spaces.
  • However, low numbers of nursing students had
gotten the flu shot putting them at risk in the
    clinical setting.
  • The service learning piece was done in
conjunction with the student Wellness Educators
from Hendrix Health Center who did presentations
educating students on how to stay healthy. And
promote the opportunities to obtain the
    vaccination (via mobile clinics).
  • The mobile clinics were in Hendrix (student
health clinic), Comstock Memorial Union (student
union at MSUM), and an affiliate campus of
Minnesota State Community and Technical College,
    also in Moorhead, Minnesota.
  • One method was to get the information out through
the monthly publication of The Flush which is
posted on the back of every bathroom door in the
    dormitories.
  • The Community Health students got involved during
the marketing and poster campaign for preventing
the flu in the greater community.
  • Other promotion materials were disseminated
through creating and mailing postcards to all
on-campus MSUM students and postcards were sent
to the parents or guardians of freshmen students.

Background
Marketing To Students
  • Furthermore, our department had just experienced
a reorganization which brought the Community
Health program and Health Services Administration
    program into the Nursing School.
  • The application for the Institute of
    Inter-professional Prevention Education was
circulated in Spring 2008 which was a perfect
opportunity for our school to demonstrate the
rationale behind the reorganization of our
    school.
  • The realignment was intended to form closer ties
between programs with similar goals and missions,
    promoting opportunities for crossover in
    curriculum content and service learning
    opportunities.

Goal 3 Access and Assessment
Conclusions
Collaboration Team
  • The final piece was to offer expanded
opportunities to receive the flu vaccine in a
variety of settings with the supervised nursing
students performing the injections and the
Community Health students assisting with record
    keeping and assessments.
  • At the clinics students were required to sign an
informed consent before receiving the vaccination
and were asked to complete a short questionnaire
    which included the following assessment
questions age, gender, living location, flu shot
history and why is the student getting the flu
    shot?
  • This collaborative project was successful with
preventing influenza on the MSUM campus.
  • The promotion of the flu vaccination by offering
the immunization through on campus clinics was
also successful because we increased student
    immunizations from last year.
  • The collaborative project did include students
and faculty in nursing, community health and
    wellness educators.

Baseline Data and Findings
Student Collaboration
  • The majority of participants were under
  • 20 years old.
  • The majority of participants were
  • freshmen and sophomores students
  • The majority of participants, almost 2/3,
  • were female students.
  • Just slightly more participants lived off
  • campus than on campus.
  • The majority of participants, 3/4, stated
  • this was their first flu shot.
  • The majority of participants got the flu
  • shot because they saw campus ads and
  • family influence.

3 Project Goals / Phases
Future Collaboration
  • Hlth 200 and NURS 110 Students Research and
    Promotion Project
  • Research What is influenza? What are the types
of influenza and symptoms? Who is at risk? How
can it be prevented through immunization and
    other preventative measures?
  • Indentify What are the key points about
influenza? What should people know about the
    disease? (i.e., Top 10).
  • How should and can you effectively disseminate
your message? What are the other public health
    campaigns for influenza?
  • Create the Media (i.e., brochure, commercial,
radio adds, public service announcements, website
    add, facebook, posters, etc.)
  • Present your Promotional material to peers in the
class and together identify the top three
    campaign promotions.
  • The first goal was to increase the college
communitys awareness of flu prevention and
secondly to increase student learning via service
the community by implementing flu vaccination
    clinics in accessible locations.
  • Nursing students were introduced to the use of
vaccination as prevention in their introductory
Foundations of Nursing class. This was both a
lecture and lab class that the practical hands on
    skill can be accomplished.
  • The Community Health students didactic component
will be introduced wellness prevention within the
community in a 200 level course (Health Promotion
and Education). This course focused on promoting
    healthy practice in the community.
  • Future collaborations on the MSUM campus could
  • be to include students and faculty from other
    health
  • services programs at MSUM including Health
  • Services Administration and Gerontology.
  • Future collaborations into the broader community
    of
  • Fargo-Moorhead area could include senior
    centers,
  • long-term care facilities, public schools and
    daycares.
