• Kazakhstan is the ninth largest country in the
  world by the size of its territory (2 717
  million sq. km)
• Population - 15 million people. Main
  nationalities Kazakhs, Russians, Germans,
  Ukrainians, other.
• Bordering countries Russia, China, Iran,
  Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and
  Kyrgyzstan

• Kazakhstan - a major oil producer
• Kazakhstan produces 40mt p.a. or 1 of world
  production
• According to IEA Kazakhstan will account for 4
  of world production by 2010
• 2nd largest oil producer among FSU after Russia
  (8 of FSU production), and largest in the
  Caspian region
• Estimated recoverable reserves of 22bbbl.

• Oil and gas in national economy
• The industry accounts for 30 of government
  revenues, and 25 of GDP
• The sector is the largest generator of export
  revenues (50)
• Since1993 through to 2000 gross FDI in the sector
  was US8.7bn (70 of total)
• Oil stabilisation National Fund established in
  2001 (US1.2bln as of end 2001)

• Type 100 State owned company formed from
  merger of KazakhOil and Transport of OilGas
• Main purposes
• - development of unified state policy in
  petroleum industry - effective and profitable
  use of natural mineral resources -
  representation of State interests in all major
  PSAs and contracts
