Title: Collaborative Engineering

1
Collaborative Engineering
  • CAD Software Used
  • Three subassemblies were modeled in three
    different CAD environments
  • Collaboration Over Web-Portal
  • TeamCenter portal was used during this project
    for data sharing.
  • Why Collaborative Engineering?
  • A global working environment has changed
    interaction among design and manufacturing
    engineers.
  • The companies that work on the same project are
often times located in different and far apart
    locations.
  • Engineers design and manufacture products in
    globally distributed environments.
  • Product data related to all stages in a product
    lifecycle design, manufacturing, assembly,
service has to be consistent across all the
    entire chain.
  • Application of web portals in keeping track of
data and information helps in achieving high
    quality product through timely engineering
    communication.
  • The portals support sharing of files from
different CAD systems which can be subsequently
    integrated in the final assembly.
  • Not all neutral exchange data formats have the
same results (geometry can be lost).
  • Switch and batteries - SolidWorks
  • Power train UGS NX
  • Housing CATIA (Generative Shape Design)

Collaboration Enablers
Exploded view in SolidWorks
  • The future engineering teams will work in a
    web-based collaborative environment, where
    designers, process planners, manufacturers, and
even clients can communicate and coordinate their
    activities through web portals.
  • Some of the key things, learned from this
    project are
  • Proper definition of user rights and training
  • Proficiency in different CAD packages
  • Timely project updates and changes
  • Packaging should be done last (it needs geometry
    from
  • all other subassemblies)
  • The software for assembly should be the same as
    for
  • the base structure and housing.
  • The final assembly has been made in SolidWorks
    and CATIA.
  • STEP neutral exchange format has been used for
data exchange among different CAD systems.
  • IGES data exchange format created some errors in
    geometry conversion (lost surfaces, some
subtracted solid have become added solids).
  • Reverse Engineering of a Drill
  • Collaborative design on a reverse engineering
    project.
  • Product 3/8" 7.2V Cordless Drill
  • Brand Name KRAFT tech, type CDP02CN-1
  • Product has been divided in 3 subassemblies
  • Switch and batteries
  • Power train
  • Housing
