Title: 10-5 Volume of Prisms and Cylinders

1
10-5 Volume of Prisms and Cylinders
  • In todays lesson we will go over many different
terms. The terms we will cover are polyhedron,
faces, bases, prism, solid and volume. We will
also add two more formulas to our list.

2
Polyhedrons
  • A polyhedron is a figure formed of polygonal
parts (different shape polygons). These different
shape are called the faces. A prism is a
polyhedron with two parallel congruent faces
which are called the bases of the figure. Prisms
are names according to their bases. The
perpendicular distance between the two bases is
    the height of the figure.

3
Volume of Prism
  • The polyhedron together with the region inside it
is called a solid. The measure of the space
occupied, or inside it, is called the volume of
    the solid.
  • The formula for the volume of any prism is
  • V Bh
  • B is the base area (area of the base of the
    prism)
  • h height of the prism (the perpendicular
    distance between the two bases)

4
Volume of a Cylinder
  • A cylinder is like a prism except that its bases
are circles instead of polygons. The volume of a
    cylinder is
  • V ?r2h

5
Capacity
  • The volume of a container is often called its
capacity. The capacity of fluids is usually
measured in liters (L) or milliliters (mL). To
take our volume and convert it to capacity we
    will use the following conversions
  • 1 L 1000 cm3
  • 1mL 1 cm3
  • 1 m3 1000 L

6
Volume of a Prism
  • Calculate the volume of this triangular prism.

7
Volume of a Cylinder
  • Calculate the volume of this cylinder (round your
    answers to three places).
