Transitional Arrangements
  • Transition begins when the first person is
    recruited into the new curriculum specialty
    training programme
  • Transition ends when the last person leaves the
    old curriculum SpR programme

  • From August 2007 entry to SHO grade and Type 1
    and Type 2 SpR training will be closed
  • All trainees not in Type 1 or Type 2 SpR
    programmes will have to compete for a place in a
    new specialty training programme
  • All entrants into specialty training will be
    allocated a NTN

  • During core training the NTN will be a generic
    psychiatry number
  • During advanced training the NTN will be
    specialty specific

Entry into specialty training
  • Entry will be competitive at all levels there
    will be no automatic transfer
  • Competitive groups
  • Foundation trainees and / or doctors with little
    additional experience
  • SHOs with 1 2 years experience
  • SHOs who have achieved the entry requirements for
    entry into specialist training
  • NCCGs

  • Foundation Trainees from August 2005
  • Should complete FY2 by the end of July 2007
  • Will be in a position to compete for specialty
    training in the spring of 2007

  • Pilot F2 trainees in 2005
  • Will complete foundation in 2006
  • Should be going into SHO posts in August 2006
  • In 2007 should compete for appointment to
    specialty training (probably at year 2 of
    Specialist Training)

  • Current Year 1 and Year 2 SHOs
  • Should review foundation curriculum to ensure
    that they can demonstrate foundation competencies
  • Trainees who have made progress with MRCPsych
    will strengthen their position for selection into
    core or advanced psychiatric training

  • SHOs in Year 3
  • Many will have passed MRCPsych
  • If they already have a NTN they will continue to
    completion of their training
  • Those who have not yet been allocated a NTN will
    apply for entry into advanced training

  • Predominantly workplace based
  • Must focus on performance (what doctors actually
    do) rather than just knowledge
  • These requirements will apply to both training
    and assessment
