Causes of the War
  • There were 3 main causes of this war between Iraq
    and the coalition forces.
  • 1. Iraq owed 14 Billion to Kuwait.
  • 2. Kuwait raised their oil production so Iraqs
    oil would not be worth as much.
  • 3. Iraq invaded Kuwait

Fighting During the War
  • The early stages of U.S. involvement began on
    January 16th, 1991 as the U.S. began attacking
    through the air against Iraqi targets.
  • Military successes included defeating the Iraqi
    military in under 100 hours in the ground war.

Saddam and Iraqi People
  • Stories of treatment of people during the war
    included Saddam moving civilians into military
    targets.
  • When Iraqi troops were leaving Kuwait, Saddam
    Hussein told his troops to burn oilfields.

    zones over Northern and Southern Iraq.

    leave Iraq by March 19th or risk invasion.
  • The United States was worried Saddam was making
    nuclear weapons in Iraq.
  • The actual date of invasion was March 20, 2003.

  • The war lasted for 21 days.
  • Fighting typically occurred in the cities.
  • The war was over once the city of Baghdad fell.

Capture of Saddam
  • The city he was captured in was near Tikrit, his
    hometown.
  • He was on the run for 8 months- April 9th, 2003
    until December 13th, 2003.
  • Possessions on him included 2 guns, 750,000, 2
    Mars bars, and SPAM.

Since The Fighting Has Ended
  • Insurgent attacks have continued against our
    troops since the end of the war.
  • Troops still in Iraq faced guerilla warfare
    tactics from Iraqi insurgents.

Execution of Saddam
  • Saddam Hussein and seven other defendants were
    charged with crimes against humanity.
  • On November 5th he was found guilty and sentenced
    to death by hanging.
  • On December 30th, 2006 a dark period in the
    history of Iraq came to an end.
