About Elizabeth Catlett
  • Elizabeth Catlett was born in Washington D.C. and
    is the youngest of three children.
  • Both of her parents were teachers and her
    grandparents had been slaves.
  • She went to Howard University where she studied
    design, printmaking and drawing.
  • She was a high school teacher in North Carolina,
    but left after two years because she was angry
    about the low teaching salaries for black people.

About Elizabeth Catlett
  • In 1940 she became the first black student to
    receive a Masters in Fine Arts (MFA ) in
    sculpture at the University of Iowa.
  • Her teacher Grant Wood urged her to work with
    subjects she knew. For Catlett, that meant black
    people and especially black women.
  • She studied ceramics at the Art Institute of
    Chicago in 1941.
  • In 1946 she received a fellowship that allowed
    her to travel to Mexico to study woodcarving.

About Elizabeth Catlett
  • She met and married the Mexican artist Francisco
    Mora and made Mexico her permanent home.
  • She taught at the National University of Mexico
    and has lived in Mexico since her retirement in
    1965.
