  • Web pages are stored on a Web Server
  • A computer with a unique Web address, accessible
    to any connected client
  • Web pages are written in HTML
  • Hyper Text Markup Language
  • Possible to automatically save Word documents
    in HTML

Create Your Home Page
  • Use FrontPage, FrontPage Express, Word 97/2000,
    Netscape Composer, or another tool to create your
    home page résumé
  • Word has a Web Page Wizard that can help you get
    started
  • Good systems design PLAN, ANALYZE, Design,
    Implement, Maintain
  • Microsoft and Netscape offer templates at their
    Web sites
  • Start with a simple outline
  • Save your home page as index.html and your résumé
    as whatever you like

Set up your UNIX account (Easy Way)
  • U/M servers run the UNIX O/S
  • For assignment 1, you must use UNIX commands to
    set permission modes on your UNIX account
  • You can do this from the Universitys Web site
  • http//www.umanitoba.ca/cgi-bin/makepublic

Set up your UNIX account (Harder Way)
  • Login to UNIX account with TeraTerm
  • Create your public_html directory and set
    permissions
  • cd
  • chmod g-l
  • chmod ax
  • mkdir public_html
  • chmod g-l public_html
  • chmod arx public_html

Upload Home Page to UNIX
  • Use WS-FTP software to log in to UNIX account
  • Use most current version available for best
    results
  • Upload your home page and résumé page to your
    public_html directory
  • Make sure to name the home page file index.html
    (so it will load automatically)

View Your Web Page
  • If everything is working properly, you can see
    your Web page by typing your URL
  • http//home.cc.umanitoba.ca/yourid
  • e.g., http//home.cc.umanitoba.ca/umsmit99
  • It may not look great to start with. Play with
    it to make it look sharp. Pay attention to good
    graphic design
  • White space (not too busy/animated, etc.)
  • Consistency (limit the number of your page
    styles try to have only one page style)
  • Logical relationships among elements

Add More Stuff
  • Search to find sites that will provide you with
    interesting direct links
  • Use Copy and Paste to move their URLs into links
    on your page
  • Find some appropriate pictures or graphics
  • In Office 97/2000
  • From the Web (right click/Save image as.)
  • Add an e-mail link (you may want to use an icon)

Updating Your Web Page
  • Remember, when you add items to your Web page,
    you are changing the diskette version only
  • Repeat the upload FTP to make it viewable
  • Refresh your diskettes file list when continuing
    to work with FTP
  • Click on the Reload or Refresh button if you see
    the same thing as before (cached page)

Send Us Your URL
  • Send the email message required in Assignment1
  • Send a new message if you want to use an
    off-campus Web site
  • THATS ALL THERE IS TO IT!
  • Perfection, however, is another matter!
