LEARNING MODULES OVERVIEW
In this tutorial, youll first discover some key
features of learning modules, and then learn the
basics of building them. Organizing and
presenting content to students is an essential
component of many online courses. First, lets
take a look at a learning module from the
students perspective.

LEARNING MODULE STUDENT VIEW
  • In version 6.0 of WebCT, you can add content
    files, quizzes, and surveys to the table of
    contents. In WebCT 6.0, you can also add the
    following content links to the Learning Module
  • Discussion categories and topics
  • Assignments
  • Media library collections
  • Chat rooms
  • Self tests
  • URLs

Learning modules include a table of contents with
links to content items.
The Action Menu has built-in navigation and
optional interactive tools. You can also add new
types of items to the Action Menu. For example,
you can now include links to specific discussion
topics.

CREATE LEARNING MODULE
Now that weve explored the new types of content
that can be incorporated into a learning module,
lets switch to the Build tab to see how to add
these items.
From the course tools menu, select Learning
Modules. A list of existing learning modules is
displayed. You can either click on one of the
existing modules, or click Create Learning
Module. For this tutorial we are creating a new
module.

CREATE LEARNING MODULE
For this tutorial, enter a title for your new
Learning Module, and accept the default options
for the table of contents.
Scroll down and hit save at the bottom of the
screen.

EDIT LEARNING MODULE
To build the learning module, click on the title
in the list.

  • You will see a screen with buttons to
  • Add File
  • Add Content Link
  • Create Heading
  • Action Menu Settings
  • Edit Link Titles

Click on the Add File button.
Click on Browse for Files

ADD FILES TO LEARNING MODULE
Click this link to select files, or click My
Computer to open the Java applet for uploading
multiple files.
From this screen, you can pick where you want to
add files from. Click on the My Computer icon to
upload a file from your C drive.

ADD FILES TO LEARNING MODULE
Find the file on your C drive that you want to
add to WebCT. Highlight the file to be uploaded.
Make sure the correct file name is in the box,
then click the Open button.

ADD FILES TO LEARNING MODULE
The file is uploaded to File Manager and a link
is added in the table of contents.

CREATE NEW FILE
You can create a new file, as well as upload an
existing file. In order to create a new file,
click on Add File, then Create File.

CREATE NEW FILE
Enter the required information for the new file.
All required information is marked by a red
asterisks. After entering all the information,
click on the Save button at the bottom of the
screen. Now, you will see both the uploaded
file, and also the newly created file in your
learning module.

ADD CONTENT TO LEARNING MODULE
Now, click on the Add Content Link

ADD ASSIGNMENT TO LEARNING MODULE
For this tutorial, we are going to add an
assignment. Choose Assignments from the drop
down list.

CREATE ASSIGNMENT
From this drop down box, you can either select an
assignment from the inventory, or create a new
one. If you are creating a new one, click on
Create Assignment.

CREATE ASSIGNMENT
Enter the Title for the new assignment. The
title is required. You can enter a description
if you want to which is optional. Scroll down
and pick the options that you want for your
assignment and then hit Save.

ADD ASSIGNMENT TO LEARNING MODULE
Now, you can see that the assignment was added to
the Learning Module correctly. In this example,
the assignment is Hidden so no one can see it
until it is set to show.
The learning module can be further enhanced by
adding headings and Action Menu items.

CREATE LEARNING MODULE
Once the Learning Module is complete, you can
preview it by simply clicking on the ActionLinks
icon and selecting Preview to verify it is set up
correctly.

CREATE LEARNING MODULE
Now, if you click on the Student View tab, you
will see the new item types in the table of
contents, just as you saw in the preview of the
new Module. From this point, the new Learning
Module is ready to use. The student view does
not have to be updated In this tutorial, we
have covered the basics of creating a new
Learning Module that can incorporate a variety of
content and activities into a structured learning
path for students.
