Title: Homework Help for Parents

1
Homework Help for Parents
  • This presentation is designed to provide parents
with tips, tools, and advice to help their child
with assignments that go beyond the classroom
and dare to venture into the book bag.

Mrs. Greens Homework Policy
  • Why I assign homework
  • I believe that homework enhances material
learned in class and allows for students to
further their knowledge and understanding of
important concepts in social studies. By giving
    students the opportunity to individually
investigate information and formulate ideas and
opinions of their own they will become
    self-reflective lifelong learners.
  • When homework is assigned
  • Homework is given twice a week as an extension
of content information presented in class through
lectures and reading or a reflection of a
classroom activity or discussion. Some homework
assignments are designed to prepare students for
an upcoming unit or assignment. Students should
spend no longer than 45 minutes to complete a
    social students assignment (not including
extended projects and studying for tests.)
  • Test and Quizzes
  • Test and Quizzes will be on block days which are
Wednesdays and Thursdays . Adequate notice along
with study guide will be provided to all
    students.

Mrs. Greens Homework Policy
  • Students Homework Responsibilities
  • All Assignments should be completed and turned in
    on time
  • Students are responsible for making up homework
and assignments that are missed due to absence.
  • Homework should be neatly done with correct
    grammar and punctuation.
  • Students will use tools such as the Homework
hotline and the social studies website to assist
    them with homework when needed.
  • If a student is unable to finish an assignment
they need to provide me with a note stating the
reason the homework is incomplete and the note
must be signed by a parent.
  • Parents Homework Responsibilities
  • Parents provide the key component for their
childs confidence and success on homework. To
ensure a positive experience for you children I
ask that you make homework a priority, provide
necessary supplies and a quiet work environment,
along with your praise and support. Please do
not hesitate to contact me if you notice a
    problem.
  • Teachers homework responsibilities
  • I will check homework and return it to students
in a timely manner My goal is to provide
meaningful feedback and incentives for all
learning styles and intelligences and utilize a
variety of motivational tools for students with
    various interests.

Tips for Homework Success
  • Encourage children to work independently
encourage your child to work on their own and to
use reference books and the textbook to collect
information. If your child needs help encourage
them to call a friend before asking you for help
    to develop problem solving skills.
  • Set up a study Area Provide a well lit, quiet
area for your child to complete homework.
  • Schedule daily homework time Encourage you child
to do their homework as soon as possible after
school or a time when parents are available to
    help if necessary.
  • Motivate children with praise Consistent praise
from you will give your child self-confidence and
    motivation.
  • Provide Help with long-range planning Students
at the middle school level are developing their
organization and planning skills. By helping your
children determine the steps to complete an
    extended assignment.

Help your child study for tests
  • Organize study Materials and use the study guide
to determine what information will be covered.
Class notes, the textbook, and homework
assignments will be helpful in completing the
    study guide.
  • Schedule study time so that your child is not
waiting until the last minute to retain all of
    the information.
  • Use effective study techniques that work best for
your child. Some examples are writing key fact
and concepts on to note cards to review
throughout the study process, underline and
highlight key points on class notes, and use the
chapter reviews and previous quiz questions for
    practice.

6
Common Homework Problems
  • Children refuse to do their homework
  • Students forget to bring home assignments
  • Your child spends too much time completing an
    assignment
  • Your child waits until the last minute to finish
    an assignment
  • The student does not fully complete the
assignment and does not do their best work.

7
Potential solutions for homework problems
  • Clearly and firmly state your homework
expectations to your child and let them know that
you expect all homework assignments to be brought
    home.
  • Schedule daily homework time when all other
activities stop and your child must go to their
    study area and do homework.
  • Praise your child when homework is complete and
for work well done to encourage their best
efforts.. Also offer encouragement when each
step of a long-term assignment is complete.
  • Back up your words with action and if the problem
    persists, impose restrictions.
  • Work with the teacher to make sure you know what
homework has been assigned, how long it should
take, and keep record of the assignments
  • Contact the teacher so that your child will know
that you and the school are working together to
    ensure responsible behavior..
