  • Youve no doubt noticed that I have chosen not
to submit a regular thousand word answer to the
    assignment question.

To do so would have gone against the first words
that came into my mind when thinking of how I
define creativity coming up with something
new.
An act of creativity involves new ways of doing
things, new ways of thinking and new knowledge.
It involves questioning the status quo and
considering if better results can be achieved
through new processes. It is widespread and can
be exemplified in a museum masterpiece, a best
seller or a university assignment such as this.

Therefore, to embrace the theme I decided that to
answer the question in 1000 words I was not
restricted to the convention of one and a half
line spaced size twelve times new roman text
arranged in paragraphs of topic sentences
followed by explanations.
I ask you to embrace the theme with me and I
promise not to do the typewriter text scroll out
the whole time.

Stop 1 Unis role in developing my creativity
  • In a time long long ago. in an age when the
path from Merewether to the Quadrangle didnt
resemble a bomb site, when the concept of an
extension unit assignment such as this was
unheard of, this student walked up the steps of
the University of Sydney for the first time It
    was the year 2005

Ok so it wasnt that long ago. The point is that
the last three years have greatly changed the way
in which I perceive myself as a creative person.
When I walked up those steps for the first time,
if there had been someone at the top who asked
the question are you a creative person? my
first thoughts would have been negative.
I had never shown an inclination for creative
arts, never learnt to play an instrument, my
dramatic talents were best not mentioned and I
was about to start a Bachelor of Commerce. The
first lecture of my university life did little to
indicate that this was the place where my
creativity would flourish it was Econometrics.
However, reflecting on these last three years I
can say that university has played a critical
role in developing and encouraging my creativity.

Stop 1 Unis role in developing my creativity
University has encouraged and developed my sense
of creativity by widening the definition of what
being a creative person is. I have been taught
the importance of creativity in areas outside
visual and performing arts. The majors I have
studied (marketing and management) have
demonstrated the practical importance of
creativity in business. A message that has been
consistent all through my studies is that
innovation is a key driver of business success.
In a move which is consistent with the theory
taught in WORK 2218, university courses have
delivered this message to students by encouraging
us to be creative ourselves by including the
concept in rewards systems i.e. marking criteria.
One obvious way in which university has
encouraged creativity is through the focus on
presentations as a form of assessment.
Presentations allow people to employ a variety of
additional means through which to communicate
their message , compared to the traditional
essay. People dress up, engage others, perform
role plays and really embrace the theme of the
presentation. Compared to first year
presentations I have found that the standard of
presentations has risen significantly as people
progress through their degrees.

  • TEAMWORK!

The single greatest university construct that
encourages and develops creativity amongst
students is the focus on teamwork. Why?

Working in teams encourages discussion, which
contributes to the creative process. People and
Organisations is one of my 14 units of study (out
of 24) that has involved group assessment tasks.
By discussing ideas, group work in People and
Organisations allowed myself and my team mates to
encourage each other to come up with better
results. The focus on teams that is consistent
across departments of the Faculty of Economics
and Business is the main way that university has
encouraged and developed my creativity.

University has also encouraged my sense of
creativity by providing me with opportunities to
participate in extra curricular activities. As
the Marketing Director for the Commerce Society
when I was in second year I was responsible for
getting people to notice our events. To achieve
this people needed to notice our posters amongst
the clutter of messages coming from other groups.
This encouraged creative thinking. The result
for one of the societys events was to make the
simple, subtle creative move of reversing a
heading in order to mirror the concept of the
event being advertised.

Stop 2 Why has this been the case?
  • Why does has the university put in the effort to
encourage and develop my creativity? They do so
because they recognise the importance creativity
plays in achieving progress. To advance we must
innovate. To innovate we need to

outside
Hence we need thinkers. This is why the
university has aimed to encourage and develop the
creativity of its students. The university aims
primarily to produce thinkers, not information
processors.
the
think
The subject which best achieved this for me was
Marketing Strategy and Planning, which taught me
not to be restricted by traditional boundaries of
industries. For example, if I was a car
manufacturer I would be aiming to not only
produce a better model of a car but to produce a
better model of transporting people from one
place to the next, which may not necessarily be a
car. This type of thinking produces the greatest
progress.

Stop 3 How could it have been done better?
  • I am happy with the way my three years at this
    university have encouraged, expressed and
channelled my personal creativity. Soon Ill
walk back down those front steps and if there is
a person waiting at the bottom to ask me if I am
a creative person my response will be profoundly
positive. University has taught me that
creativity is not limited to artistic talents, it
is a way of thinking. It can be taught and
learned. Suggestions about how the creativity of
students could be better encouraged and developed
    at university include
  • - continued use of group work
  • - efforts to develop conversation and debate in
    tutorials and lectures
  • - rewarding risk taking, such as presenting an
    assignment in an unconventional fashion
