  • About 350km from the southern coast of Yemen
  • Area 3600 sq km
  • 500 km from Mukalla

Characteristic
  • 1.     northern coast where the capital Hodibou
    is based
  • 2.     southern coastal plateaux, western
    plateaux
  • eastern plateaux and central plateaux
  • 4.     it reaches an altitude of 1500 meters
  • 5.     the main activities are fishing and
    agriculture
  • 6.     the mean daily temperature ranges from 22c
    to 31c
  • 7.     the mean humidity ranges from 50 to 75
  • 8.  the seasonal rainfall takes place from
    October to January while limited rainfall takes
    place from March to June (170mm/year)
  • 9.     it is very windy between June and August
    which is the dry season

ITNs demonstration project In Socotra Island
  • January 2002 a demonstration project of
    impregnated bed nets was established in Socotra
    Island to cope with the global strategy of vector
    control
  • The objective is to ensure the prevention of
    morbidity especially later during consolidation
    and maintenance phases of the eradication
    programme when larviciding will be gradually
    withdrawn.

  • Data on morbidity and severe malaria collected
    through the existing infrastructure will be
    reviewed in order to assess the impact. School
    surveys in the operation area will be carried out
    at the end of transmission season.
  • 3.Meeting with the local inhabitants to evaluate
    their usage of the impregnated nets.

Treated bednets contributed to malaria reduction
along with other vector control measures within
the concept of IVC

Current situation
  • 3500 impregnated bed nets are currently
    distributed in Socotra island to replace residual
    house spraying which was carried out in the
    eastern part of the island at the beginning of
    the transmission season.
  • Iconnet is used for impregnation
  • it was received free of charge from a local
    private company for trial purpose.
