Video Conferencing 101
2
What is Videoconferencing?
  • Videoconferencing technology connects two or more
people at different locations so that they can
    communicate, interact, and share information.
  • The locations of videoconferencing units, and
people using them, can be as close as the room
next door, or as far away as a continent on the
    other side of the world.
  • People can share computer applications for
collaboration and make changes or edits in real
    time.
  • Allows students in classrooms to connect with
other students, experts in a variety of fields,
    and people around the world.

3
Why Videoconferencing?
  • Videoconferencing provides students and teachers
with the opportunity to expand teaching and
    learning possibilities.
  • - Schools have the opportunity to tap resources
    around the world
  • - Learning in an emerging technological
environment prepares students with real world
    communication skills
  • - Utilizes world-wide resources including
    experts, professionals, remote institutional
    resources, and other students
  • - Functioning in a global climate

4
How Does Videoconferencing Impact Student
Learning?
  • As libraries, museums, schools, governments and
    other agencies add videoconferencing, students
will be able to connect with experts, collaborate
with other students, work in partnership on
    projects, and participate in world-wide
    activities.
  • These activities, using videoconferencing, build
    relationships and encourage active learning.
  • Impacts include
  • Enhanced motivation
  • Improved communication and presentation skills
  • Increased connection with outside resources
  • Effective learning environments
  • Expanded teaching capabilities
  • Links to people from different social, cultural,
    and economic backgrounds

5
Using Videoconferencing in the K-12 Classroom
  • The delivery of instruction with the aid of
    videoconferencing technology involves the same
first steps and adjustments as any new
    instructional technique
  • Selecting and Learning to use technology
    components
  • Hardware
  • Software
  • Preparing the classroom setting and set the stage
    for use of videoconferencing
  • Classroom Set-up and Management
  • Student Behavior
  • Teacher planning and preparation
  • Planning
  • Pedagogy
  • Presentation Styles
  • Delivery and Storage Options
  • Student and classroom considerations

6
  • Student Centered Approach to learning
    Videoconferencing activities are generally best
delivered in a student centered approach where
the focus is on the learning activities and fully
engages the students in the process.
  • Project based learning activities
  • Demonstrations
  • Experiments and investigations
  • Displays of art work or other visuals
  • Shared documents that can be modified from both
    sites
  • Student Interactions  Students have the unique
opportunity to interact with others at a
distance, and experience people and places that
are not available in the regular classroom
setting.   Students can connect with other
students or with experts in the field. Examples
    of classroom and/or individual interactions
    include
  • Question and Answer periods
  • Discussions and debates
  • Role playing, skits, and plays
  • Presentations using multimedia software
  • Games or contests
  • Student Assistant  Students involved in the
operation of the videoconferencing equipment are
learning in two ways - technical skills and
content skills.  Involving the students in the
management of the videoconference can make a
difference in the delivery of the videoconference
since it takes more than just the teacher to
    operate and effectively deliver a
    videoconference.

7
What are some best practices for implementing
videoconferencing?
  • Planning - careful planning ensures a smooth
    implementation process.
  • Classroom set-up - the physical set-up in the
    classroom is key.
  • Teacher knowledge and comfort level with hardware
and software is essential to implementation
  • Coach students to be active participants in the
    videoconferencing process

Strategies for Successful Videoconferencing
Sessions
  • Focus on the learning, the content, and the
    outcome.
  • Discuss expectations with students - behavior,
    engagement, interactions, and participation
  • Careful planning will ensure a successful lesson.
  • The choices of instructional delivery influence
    the learning outcomes
  • Engaging Students in Interaction - Students need
encouragement and practice in using the
    videoconferencing models of interactions.
  • Assess the Outcomes
