Key Terms
  • High ability refers to those students who are
above the learning level of the average student
in the classroom in one or more subject areas
  • Differentiation the most commonly used method of
altering lessons to reach the diversity of
learners in the classroom, at all levels

4
General Information
  • Students who are of high ability in one area may
not be high in all areas.
  • Giving students more work is not the way to deal
    with a high ability student.
  • Differentiation in the classroom helps all
students, not just those with high ability.

5
My Personal Connection
  • In my student teaching experience, there were
several students who were working above the level
    of their peers.
  • I wondered how I could help these students to
learn and grow at their level, without giving
    them extra busy work

6
What to Do in the Classroom
  • Differentiate curriculum using learning styles,
multiple intelligences, and your own knowledge of
    your students.
  • Teach using a variety of methods, including
    cooperative learning.
  • Facilitate your own professional development and
research methods to help you teach to various
    learning levels.

7
Importance to Teachers
  • Students of high ability are in every classroom.
  • High ability students are ready for instruction
    above the average student
  • Teachers need to know how to reach these students
  • Knowing how to reach the high ability students
can help teachers to reach students at all levels

8
Benefits to All Students
  • All students are not the same.
  • Using a variety of teaching methods and
    differentiating curriculum reaches all students.
  • Students of different intelligences and learning
    styles will also benefit.
