Highlights of 2008/2009
  • PNG observer programme now have our own national
    fisheries observer trainers(2 x appointed
    recently and 3 x supporting trainers)
  • Basic observer training course is now is now
    being delivered at the PNG National Fisheries
    College.
  • PNG programme currently have 159 certified
    observers who have passed the competency based
    training (175 by end of 2009).
  • PNG Programme is the biggest in the region.
  • Well established and one of the effective
    programme.
  • Met the WCPFC minimum standard and authorized by
    WCPFC to place observers under the ROP.
  • Higher observer coverage level.
  • Produced some of the best observers in the
    region.
  • Have about seven different fishery to cover.
  • Active in FAD closure observer engagement on 27
    Japanese fleets.
  • Well office set up at head quarters and 5 busy
    ports around the country.
  • Allocating observers for special projects(
    Stomach, liver, mussel, otholits and spill
    sampling, tagging programme, tag seedings).
  • Observers appointed to permanent positions within
    the Provincial Fisheries Department, National
    Fisheries College and National Fisheries
    Authority.
