11th Annual Canadian Investment Awards in
association with
  • AWARDS CATEGORIES, CRITERIA OVERVIEW
  • AND JURY MEMBERS
  • The event theme, "Recognizing Long-term
    Investing", reflects a longer-term perspective
throughout the program and specifically when
selecting award winners. Leaders are selected by
teams of analysts, by independent juries, and
directly by peer vote, investor and advisor
votes. The awards line-up has again fine tuned
    representation amongst investment product options
with changes to labour sponsored and segregated
categories and the addition of pension /
    institutional category.
  • All award categories, committees and criteria
have been reviewed and updated again this year.
Labour Sponsored Investment Funds have been
unincluded for this year pending review of class
and segregated categories have been merged into
overall mutual fund category given similarity in
underlying investment fund. The addition of the
    Pension/Institutional Fund award is especially
significant, as it marks the first time that
institutional money management has been included
in the awards. This innovation is in keeping with
the Canadian Investment Awards' ongoing policy of
widening the scope of the awards.
  • A committee of professional analysts is assembled
each year to choose their leading funds in a
series of award categories from a Morningstar
Canada prepared list of eligible funds and
investment companies. Each analyst is responsible
for providing three nominations in order of
priority for each category. The analysts apply
    both quantitative and qualitative assessments
based on information from the previous 3-year
period with emphasis on longer-term results. This
information is aggregated to provide the top 3
finalists and winner. This is the only time each
year that the overall industry is represented in
one august group to choose leading investment
fund, individual or company. All analysts are
prohibited from voting for any product/service
manufactured by any of their affiliated
companies. Morningstar Canada applies a strict
enforcement of this by imposing regular checks
    and audits.
  • ANALYSTS CHOICE AWARDS
  • These awards are voted upon by a group of senior
analysts. They are chosen by eligibility not
submissions. Please do not submit to win in
    these categories.

  • Analytical Guidelines
  • When nominating funds, or making a final
selection, each committee member considered the
following issues. It is important to note that
these were guidelines only and each committee
member could consider relevant issues that were
not listed and weight the following issues as
they saw fit. While we want to maintain the
highest standards of analytical rigour, it is
equally important to allow for differences of
opinion and multiple perspectives within a sound
    analytical framework.
  • Criteria The following is criteria that each
    committee member considered when nominating
funds. However, each analyst had flexibility to
add criteria or weight the suggested criteria
    independently.
  • Quantitative Considerations
  • Absolute performance
  • Relative Performance
  • Risk/return profile (relative to benchmark or
    peer group)
  • Tax Efficiency

  • Qualitative Considerations

11th Annual Canadian Investment Awards in
association with
  • 2005 CANADIAN INVESTMENT MARKETING AWARDS (CIMA)
  • These awards are voted upon by a senior jury and
are chosen from your submissions. Please use
submission form supplied to send us your entry.
  • Canadian Investment Marketing Award 1
  • Canadian Investment Marketing Award 2
  • Canadian Investment Marketing Award 3
  • The objective of the Canadian Investment
Marketing Awards is to recognize excellence and
great marketing within the growing and maturing
    Canadian investment industry.
  • Marketing campaigns or initiatives are judged in
their entirety rather than evaluating just one or
two elements, such as the creative or media.
Submissions can include any marketing program or
initiative e.g. the promotion of a new service, a
product launch, an education program for
advisors, investors or a sales team, or a brand
    awareness program. Judges evaluate the
effectiveness of the strategy, the execution and
results achieved versus the objectives. They also
consider the use of research, innovation and the
educational aspects of the marketing program or
    initiative.
  • Samples of the various elements used in the
marketing campaign or program are submitted and
may include things such as support materials,
training tools or materials, advertising samples
(internet, print, television, radio, etc.). There
is no advantage given to total dollars spent. The
scope of qualifying firms includes any financial
    services firm.
  • The CIMA committee is a senior panel of judges
    representing marketing professionals and
financial advisors. This group considers the
effectiveness of the marketing campaign or
program based on the target audience indicated in
    the submission.
  • For 2005, judges will measure marketing
    excellence by considering
  • Did the marketing program/campaign/initiative set
    out a strategy and objectives?
  • Were measures set forth at the beginning to
outline what was to be accomplished?
  • Did market research contribute to the strategy,
execution or any aspect of the marketing program?

11th Annual Canadian Investment Awards in
association with
  • INDIVIDUAL AWARDS
  • These winners are chosen by a peer voting process
of industry executives. One executive from each
firm will represent the vote of the firm.
  • Career Achievement
  • Person of Influence of the Year - NEW
  • Morningstar Fund Manager Of The Year Award
  • THE CAREER ACHIEVEMENT AWARD winner is chosen via
peer voting process by senior industry executives
    from fund management, banking, distribution,
media, analysts and suppliers. Previously, the
Career Achievement Award had been chosen by the
annual analyst committee alone. The Career
Achievement award is awarded to an individual who
has proven superior performance and an
    outstanding lifetime contribution to the
financial community. That individual must have
    contributed significantly to the Canadian
financial services industry (banking/ insurance /
    investment products / manufacturing /
distribution, etc.) for over 20 years. Other
criteria for consideration is community and
    corporate citizenship and commitment to
    education, philanthropy, service (if applicable),
and support of industry and/or investor standards
or principles of merit. Voters provide 3 choices
in order of preference but are limited to one
vote per firm. Discussion is encouraged.
  • THE PERSON OF INFLUENCE AWARD (NEW) winner is
chosen via peer voting process by senior industry
    executives from fund management, banking,
distribution, media, analysts and suppliers. This
is the inaugural inclusion of this award. This
award is presented to an individual who has
proven superior performance and an outstanding
contribution to the financial community during
the previous 12 months. That individual must have
    contributed significantly to the Canadian
financial services industry (banking / insurance
    / investment products / manufacturing /
    distribution, etc.). Other criteria for
    consideration is community and corporate
    citizenship and commitment to education,
    philanthropy, service (if applicable), and
support of industry and/or investor standards or
principles of merit. Voters provide 3 choices in
order of preference but are limited to one vote
    per firm. Discussion is encouraged.
  • MORNINGSTAR FUND MANAGER OF THE YEAR AWARD
honours the Canadian mutual fund manager who has
produced the best performance over the past year.
In essence, Morningstar answered the question,
If we had to choose only one manager with whom
to invest our money - who would it be?
Specifically, only a manager of a Canadian mutual
fund or segregated fund recognized by the CIFSC
is considered. Managers of hedge funds, labour
sponsored investment funds, pooled funds or fund
of fund products are not in contention. The only
other eligibility requirement is that the manager
must have a 3-year track record on a recognized
mutual fund or segregated fund. When analyzing
fund manager performance, Morningstar considers a
variety of qualitative and quantitative measures.
Performance measures such as absolute returns,
relative returns, risk-adjusted returns and tax
efficiency play a role in judging. The fund
    managers performance numbers are ranked,
compared and contrasted in various contexts and
    not in isolation. Qualitatively, Morningstar
looked for managers who stand by their investment
discipline, show exemplary fund governance, and
provide clear communication to unit holders.
  • The following is a list of the main factors that
are involved in the decision making process
  • Investment discipline
  • Returns (both relative and absolute)
