1European Energy Forum Dinner-Debate Will fuel
cells help Europe meet its energy challenges?

3The case for fuel cells and hydrogen for
sustainable mobility and power
- A unique combination of advantages
- 1. Environment
- Zero CO2, zero toxic emissions fuelled with H2
- With fossil fuels, toxic emissions are negligible
and CO2 reduced significantly - E.G. FC vehicles fuelled with H2 from natural
gas reduce CO2 by 30
4The case for fuel cells and hydrogen for
sustainable mobility and power
- WWF report - Key findings
- CO2 emissions from current European fossil
electricity generation could be halved by fuel
cells - Fuel cells also offer extremely low or even zero
emissions of health damaging pollutants - They are a key component for a sustainable energy
future, allowing the gradual switch from natural
gas to hydrogen - Significant new hi-tech business / job creation
opportunity - Source Fuel cells for distributed power
benefits, barriers, and perspectives M. Pehnt

5The case for fuel cells and hydrogen for
sustainable mobility and power
- A unique combination of advantages
- 1. Environment Zero or Reduced Emissions of
Greenhouse Gas and Toxic Pollutants - 2. Inherent High Energy Efficiency
- 3. Improved Energy Security through
differentiation of sources and decentralised
power supply
6The case for fuel cells and hydrogen for
sustainable mobility and power
- A unique combination of advantages
- 4. Foster the development of renewable energies
- Renewable energies are limited and very valuable
- FCs provide the most efficient way to use these
sources

8The case for fuel cells and hydrogen for
sustainable mobility and power
- A unique combination of advantages
- 4. Foster the development of renewable energies
- 5. Siting flexibility allows use of by-product
heat - 6. Potential to enhance global competitiveness
and sustainable economic growth in Europe
9Early Market Opportunities
- Deployment will contribute to the creation of
industrial capability - Commitment to the installation of 20,000 of such
products by 2010 - will provide the base from which a new hi-tech
globally competitive industry could be to built

15What must Europe do to ensure full participation
in an emerging global industry?
16EC Proposal to form a Joint Technology
Initiative
- 45 European companies have formed an association
called the JTI Industry Grouping - Implementation Plan suggests 7.4bn
public-private investment in RDD and
deployment activities - Programme represents a broadly consented, Europe
wide effort - Public commitment is now required to support
- these proposals to allow industry to make the
- massive investments needed to commercialise
- H2FC technologies
17How can the European Parliament help? Call for
Action
- At European Level
- 1. Support the proposal for JTI
- 2. Support the Green Hydrogen Declaration
- At regional level
- 3. Empower regional authorities to develop
sustainable and decentralised energy production - 4. Encourage regions to participate in EU
demonstrations - 5. Involve regions with industry about
opportunities to integrate FCs in energy and
transport
