Fire at Russian School for Deaf Kids

• At a boarding school in Southern Russia
• The children ranged from ages 6 to 14
• Fire killed 28 children and injured 17 others

Rescuing the Children

• Firefighters saved 138 people in the two-story
  building
• Many of these children survived by being thrown
  out second story windows on mattresses and
  bedding
• Many were hospitalized for burns, smoke
  inhalation, fractures, and shock

Cause of Casualties

• May have resulted from a short circuit
• Others blame casualties on building code
  violations
• School staff tried to put out fire
• Fire department was not called for at least nine
  minutes

Action Taken After Fire

• Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov ordered
  action taken
• All Russian schools are to be surveyed for fire
  safety immediately

• Fifty people a day and 18,000 a year die in fires
  in Russia
• Most fires in Russia are caused carelessness and
  smoking while drinking
• Others caused by lack of fire alert systems

• Death toll in Russia is 4.5 times greater than
  U.S. and 12.5 times greater that United Kingdom
• The U.S. has twice the population as Russia

• The U.S. has 28 million deaf or hard of hearing
  people in America
• These people and their families are encouraged to
  learn about fire safety.

Whats available?

• People with disabilities have options for fire
  protection
• Since standard audible alarms are not
  appropriate, other options have been created
• For example alarms that vibrate or provide a
  flashing light.
