7- SEXUAL VIOLENCE ABUSE MH Service Context
- significant impact of violence abuse on the
mental ( physical) well being of
victims/survivors (50 or more women within MH
system are surviving child sexual abuse) - level of awareness low generally among mental
health professionals - women (and men) who have been sexually
victimised do not, in the main, receive the care
support they need - inappropriate sexual behaviour rarely
adequately addressed

12Sobering Thought
- Figures from 2005/06 showed that of the 28
individuals who died in or following police
contact, 2 were detained under Section 136 of the
Mental Health Act 1983 and 4 had some form of
mental health needs - An IPCC study estimated 11,500 people detained
under 136 in 2005/6 for 10 hours on average - 11 of 24 shootings by the police between 1998
2001 involved someone with mental health needs (4
times more likely to be killed by police)
13Complex Needs of the Mentally Disordered Offender
- Substance use
- physical health problems
- homelessness or accommodation difficulties
- debts, financial exclusion and poverty
- lack of basic skills, low educational attainment
and unemployment - relationship needs
- These difficulties are often compounded by a lack
of co-ordination among services.
