HISTORY OF BUDDHISM
  • Started by SIDDHARTHA GAUTAMA
  • Religion is more than 2500 years old
  • Buddha was born into royalty and wealth in Nepal
  • Never witnessed poverty, sickness or death

THE BEGINNING
  • Visited the outside world one day
  • Saw an old man, sick man and corpse for first
    time
  • Greatly disturbed by what he saw
  • Also saw a monk and decided to leave privileged
    life and live as a homeless holy man

  • Decided to first live a life of self-denial and
    discipline
  • Abandoned lifestyle and pursued the MIDDLE WAY
    live neither life of luxury or poverty
  • Sat beneath the Bodhi tree (the tree of
    awakening), meditated, reflected and determined
    to find truth
  • Was ENLIGHTENED and became the BUDDHA (the
    enlightened one)

    insight into true nature of life
  • No belief in a personal god
  • Belief that nothing is fixed or permanent
    change always possible
  • All life is interconnected
  • Compassion is natural and important

  • The MAHABODHI TEMPLE is the site of Buddhas
    Enlightenment now a pilgrimage site
