1. Course Registration - essential
  • Creates Class List
  • Creates Examination Register
  • Creates entry in Electronic Grade Book for marks
    to be entered.
  • Should be done by September 5 for Semester 1, and
    by the end of the first week of Semester 2.
  • All students must register every semester until
    their degree is awarded.

2. Course Registration (contd)
  • Registration is done on-line.
  • Your programme coordinator will guide you in this
    process. Instructions are given in the New
    Student Handbook available in print and on-line

3. Fees
  • Fees are to be paid on registration the
    Financial Handbook gives all details on fees.
  • Students in Taught Masters programmes are
    required to pay for the courses for which they
    have registered as well as their University fees
    by the end of the second week of the semester.
  • University registration fees are payable every
    semester until you graduate.

4. Leave of Absence
  • If for any reason you need to be absent from an
    academic programme for a semester or more, you
    must apply for formal leave stating the reasons
    for the application. Applications should be
    submitted by the end of the third week of the
    semester.
  • Leave of absence will not normally be granted for
    more than two consecutive academic years.

5. Examinations
  • Your examination timetable will be published on
    the notice boards as well as on Cave Hill on Line
    (CHOL). www.cavehill.uwi.edu/chol
  • Students must attend examinations on the date and
    time given.
  • Students who miss examinations because of illness
    or other have any extenuating circumstances to be
    considered must submit a report within 7 days of
    the part of the examination affected with medical
    certificate where relevant.

6. Exam Regulations
  • If a course has examinations and coursework
    components, to pass the course you must pass both
    components at the first attempt.
  • If you fail one component of a course, you may be
    permitted a second attempt at that component the
    next time the course is offered.
  • Fees for re-taking a course or a component of a
    course are outlined in the Financial Information
    Handbook.

7. Exam Regulations (2)
  • No candidate will be normally permitted to repeat
    the examination in any one course on more than
    one occasion.
  • Graduate Students are graded on a different scale
    to Undergraduate students.
  • A 70 and over
  • B 60 69
  • B 50 59
  • F 0 49

8. Exam results
  • If you miss an examination or project deadline,
    you will be deemed to have failed that component
    of the course.
  • If you are dissatisfied with examination results
    you have four (4) weeks of the publication of the
    results to report this in writing.
  • Results are published through Cave Hill On-Line.
    Grade letters are NOT normally sent to students.
  • Results are not available until they have been
    declared by a Board of Examiners. Our website
    will give declaration dates.

9. Review of results
  • The fee for re-marking of an examination or
    course work is currently BDS125.00 per course.
  • If the re-mark results in a higher grade, the fee
    is refunded.
  • If the re-mark results in a lower grade, that
    replaces the original grade and the fee is not
    refundable.

10. Distinctions
  • To be considered for award of the degree with
    Distinction, students must pass all courses at
    first sitting and attain an average of 70 or
    more in the written courses. Where the programme
    includes a Research Paper, Practicum or
    Dissertation, the grade attained in this must
    also be an A.

11. Transfer of Registration
  • Any student in a taught programme may apply
    after one semester - through their Supervisor for
    a transfer to the relevant M.Phil programme in
    their Department.
  • The procedure is outlined in the Graduate Studies
    Guide for Students and Supervisors.

12. Upgrade of Registration
  • A candidate registered for the M.Phil degree may
    apply after a period of 1 year of initial
    registration, and before the end of the 3rd year
    of registration, to be upgraded to PhD.
  • The procedure for this is outlined in the
    Graduate Studies Guide for Students and
    Supervisors.

13. Time Limits
  • Taught Masters - as outlined in Programme
    Regulations.
  • M.Phil Full-time Max 3 years
  • M.Phil Part-time Max 5 years
  • PhD Full-time Max 5 years
  • PhD Part-time Max 7 years

14. Seminars and Courses
  • Research students are required to present
    seminars and complete written courses before
    beginning their thesis
  • MPhil students 2 seminars 6 credits of courses
  • PhD students 3 seminars 9 credits of courses
  • From academic year 2008-09 MPhil and PhD students
    have to register for graduate seminars.
