Title: EHHI: The Harmful Effects of Vehicle Exhaust

1
EHHI The Harmful Effects of Vehicle Exhaust
  • Scientific experts now believe the nation faces
an epidemic of illnesses that are exacerbated by
    air pollution. These illnesses include
    cardiovascular disease, asthma, chronic
obstructive pulmonary disease, lung cancer and
    diabetes.

2
Diesel Pollution Primer
  • In a conventional diesel engine, fuel is not as
well mixed with air as in a gasoline engine. As
a result of this mix there are fuel-dense pockets
in the combustion chamber and this results in
incompletely burned fuel in the form of soot from
    the diesel exhaust.

3
Diesel Pollution Primer
  • New standards will be slowly phased in over the
next ten years however, older high polluting
vehicles can continue to operate for decades.

4
Diesel Pollution Primer
  • Soot finds ways to harm your body, causing
chronic bronchitis and asthma, and diesel exhaust
is classified as either a probable or known
cancer causing agent. Diesel pollution can be
    deadly, causing premature mortality through
cancer or heart and respiratory illnesses.

5
Diesel Pollution Primer
  • Children-- and their developing lungs-- may also
suffer more acutely from breathing in diesel
    soot.
  • Is the air on school buses making our kids
sick? (Right Click on the link and select Open
    Hyperlink)

6
Diesel Pollution Primer
  • Soot begins in the combustion of an engine and
ends up in the innermost reaches of an
individuals lungs, this burden can be lifted off
of our backs with the help of stricter air
    regulations and cleaner engine technology.

7
Diesel Engines and Public Health
  • With mounting evidence, diesel exhaust poses
major health hazards. Reducing diesel pollution
    has become a public priority.
  • Diesel engines emit large quantities of
particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen oxides
(NOx). Diesel powered vehicles account for
nearly half of all nitrogen oxides and more than
    two-thirds of all particulates.

8
Diesel Engines and Public Health
  • Diesel exhaust is a probable human carcinogen and
the California EPA estimates 450 out of every
1,000,000 Californians are at risk of developing
cancer due to diesel exhaust exposure.
  • Occupational health studies of railroad, dock,
trucking, and bus garage workers exposed to high
levels of diesel exhaust over many years
    consistently demonstrate a 20 to 50 percent
increase of lung cancer or mortality.

9
How Catalytic Converters Work
  • The catalytic converter only works at a fairly
high temperature, in a cold engine, the catalytic
converter does almost nothing to reduce pollution
    in your exhaust.
  • Catalytic converters in diesel engines do not
work as well in reducing NOx, the diesel engines
run cooler than a gasoline engine.

10
How Can the Fossil Fuel Stabilizer Help?
  • Works on all types of fossil fuel
  • Reduces emissions significantly
  • Improves gas mileage
  • Needs no maintenance
  • Easily removed and installed
  • Affects fuel before combustion resulting in a
    more complete burn
