Title: Experian Origins software: a tool for monitoring inequalities in BME health

1
Experian Origins software a tool for monitoring
inequalities in BME health?
  • Louise Noon
  • NHS Nottingham City

2
Why do we need it?
  • Race relations (amendment) Act 2000 gives
statutory duty to promote race equality
  • Poor data quality recorded on ethnicity either in
    hospital or by GP
  • Census 2001 now out of date
  • Nam Pehchan software only estimates South Asian

3
What does it do?
  • Assigns one of 180 types, 13 groups, language and
    religion
  • Based on likely origin of name
  • Larger database of names than Nam Pehchan (600
    000 vs. 9000)
  • Local look up table converts type to Census
    categories or bespoke groups

4
Validation
  • Checked against 2007 births data which has
ethnicity coded by Census 2001 categories
  • 2001 PopX data checked against ward ethnic
    summaries from Census 2001
  • Good general agreement except for Black Caribbean

Evaluation
  • Provides ethnicity data where there is no
    alternative
  • Potential to carry out HEA across dimension of
    ethnicity
  • Can be run on up-to-date populations
  • Can identify Polish and other types not in
    the Census
  • -Needs further validation
  • -Doesnt deal well with African/Caribbean
