1
Academic Probation Advisement Tutorial
  • College of Business
  • San Francisco State University
  • Fall 2009

2
What is Required for this Tutorial?
  • 1. SFSU Unofficial Transcripts
    (https//www.sfsu.edu/student)
  • 2. Academic Standing Petition (http//www.sfsu.edu
    /admisrec/forms/regforms/aspf.pdf)
  • Complete all 5 assignment tasks found throughout
the tutorial (Please note that the assignments
will need to be typed and provided on a separate
    sheet of paper).
  • Because you are completing this mandatory
    requirement after the University deadline
    (October 30, 2009), you must answer a 6th
assignment question located towards the end of
    this presentation.

3
What is Academic Probation?
  • - Per university standards, all students must
maintain a 2.0 minimum in both their all
    college and SFSU GPAs.
  • - When either GPAs fall below 2.0, you are placed
    on academic probation.
  • - Students remain on academic probation until
both GPAs (cumulative All College and SFSU) reach
    the 2.0 plateau or higher.
  • - If your GPA is extremely low or you have been
on probation for more than one semester, you may
be placed on subject to disqualification status.

4
Subject to Disqualification
  • - Subject to disqualification status occurs when
the GPA falls on or below the minimum guidelines
described in the Academic Standards chart or when
a student has been on academic probation for more
    than one semester.
  • - Subject to disqualification is a much more
serious status than academic probation. Students
who fell on AP following the spring 09 or summer
09 semester, will enter into the subject to DQ
category if they remain on probation following
    the fall 09 semester.
  • - Assignment 1 Look at your SFSU unofficial
transcripts. Find both GPAs. What is your All
College GPA? What is your SFSU GPA?

5
Subject to Disqualification (Cont)
  • - 3 Semester Rule Students who have been on
probation for 2 or more semesters, are subject to
disqualification from SFSU if their All College
and SFSU GPA are not at the 2.0 threshold by the
    end of their 3rd semester.
  • - 3 Semester Rule Applied If your Spring or
Summer 2009 grades caused your overall SFSU or
All College GPA to drop below a 2.0, you have
until the end of the spring 2010 semester to
raise both your SFSU and All College GPA to a 2.0
or higher. If you do not meet this standard, you
will be administratively disqualified by the
    University.
  • - Terms of the contract will be stated on the
Academic Standing Petition. This petition will be
signed by your major advisor and submitted to the
Registrars Office (Deadline October 30, 2009).

6
Subject to Disqualification (Cont)
  • - In addition to the 3 Semester Rule (see
previous slide) students are placed into the
Subject to Disqualification category if their All
College or SFSU GPA drops below a certain level.
  • Freshman (0-29 units)..... Below a 1.50 GPA
  • Sophomore (30-59 units). Below a 1.70 GPA
  • Junior (60-89 units) Below a 1.85 GPA
  • Senior (90 units) Bellow a 1.95 GPA

7
Additional Information Regarding Subject to DQ
  • For further information, please read the
    following website regarding the universitys
policy on probation and subject to
    disqualification http//www.sfsu.edu/bulletin/cu
    rrent/acadstnd.htm
  • Assignment 2 In which semester did you first
go on academic probation? How many semesters
have you been on probation/subject to
    disqualification status?

8
Positive Grades
  • - In order to eliminate your academic deficiency
improve your GPA, you must earn positive
    grades.
  • - Positive grades are A, A-, B,B, B-, and C.
  • - C grade is a neutral grade. This means a C
grade will not negatively nor positively affect
    your GPA.

9
Negative Grades
  • - Grades of C- and below are considered
    negative grades.
  • - Negative grades will worsen your academic
    deficiency lower your GPA.
  • Negative grades include C-, D, D, D-, F, WU.

10
WU Withdrawal Unauthorized
  • - WU stands for withdrawal unauthorized. This
grade is earned when a student does not
properly withdraw from a course and stops
    attending the class.
  • - WU grade is calculated in the GPA as an F
    grade.

11
CR/NC Grading Option
  • - CR/NC allows a student not to earn a letter
grade. Instead a CR or NC (Pass or Fail)
    grade will be issued.
  • In order to earn CR, the final work in the
class must be evaluated to be C- or better.
Any grade below C- will result in NC grade.
  • - CR/NC grading option does not affect the GPA
and is not computed in the GPA. CR grade earns
units. NC grade does not earn units.
  • - In courses where the CR/NC option is permitted,
students must change their grading option through
MySFSU. The deadline for the Fall 2009 semester
    is October 20, 2009.
  • - Within the business major, students are allowed
to take up to 2 core courses for CR/NC. Any of
the business core courses, except for BUS 682 or
BUS 690 may be taken for CR/NC. All
concentration courses must be taken for a letter
    grade.

12
Repeat of Courses
  • - An undergraduate student who has received a
grade of C or higher may not repeat a course
unless the course is described in the Bulletin
    as repeatable for credit.
  • - A student cannot repeat a course that has a
grade of I (Incomplete) unless the I grade has
    been converted to a grade.
  • - Courses may not be repeated for additional
units, unless the course is repeatable per the
    current SFSU Bulletin.
  • - If a student chooses to repeat a course in
which the grade was passing, all grade points
will be calculated in the GPA, but the
    units will be earned once.
  • - A student who has received a grade may repeat
the course only once more, unless the course is
repeatable for credit per the current SFSU
Bulletin. Even if you withdraw from a course,
you will still only be allowed to repeat a
    course one time.

13
Grades
  • - Review your SFSU unofficial transcripts.
  • - ASSIGNMENT 3 Record all of the courses in
    which you earned a C-, D, D, D-, F, or WU
grade. Type out the name of the class, the
grade you received and the semester in which you
